After the commercial success of Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and earning a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Meat Loaf nevertheless experienced some difficulty establishing a steady career within the United States. The key to this success was his popularity in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He received the 1994 Brit Award in the United Kingdom for best-selling album and single. He appeared in the 1997 film Spice World and he ranked 23rd for the number of weeks spent on the UK charts in 2006. He ranks 96th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". Meat Loaf appeared in over 50 films and television shows, sometimes as himself or as characters resembling his stage persona. His film roles include Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Robert Paulsen in Fight Club (1999). His early stage work included dual roles in the original Broadway cast of The Rocky Horror Show. He also appeared in the musical Hair, both on and Off-Broadway.

Or you might have to pick her up at the police station
Coz if there's trouble in this town, you know she's gonna find it
She's like the devil in a short skirt but I don't mind it
Everybody thinks I'm crazy, but they don't even know
She's kinda like a rose
She'll cut you on the your thumb
And fuck you when she's done
The bitch is like a rose
And let me tell you son
That every time you think you've got control
Sh-sh-she got it
Maybe I'm a victim of infatuation
You know that hot-blooded girl's got my inspiration
Yeah it doesn't really matter that she isn't 21
Coz she's always backstage when the band gets done
Everybody thinks I'm crazy, but they don't even know
She's kinda like a rose
She'll cut you on the your thumb
She'll kick you when you're low
And fuck you when she's done
The bitch is like a rose
And let me tell you son
That every time you think you've got control
Sh-sh-she got it
She got jagged edges and a dirty mouth
(What a lady)
She got everything that I don't wanna live without
She's kinda like a rose
She's kinda like a rose
She's kinda like a rose
And you might wanna run
Coz even when she's cold
She's burnin like the sun
The bitch is like a rose
And smokin like a gun
Don't care if you don't like her
I love her
I love her
She's kinda like a rose
She's kinda like a rose
She'll cut you on the your thumb
She'll kick you when you're low
And fuck you when she's done
The bitch is like a rose
And let me tell you son
That every time you think you've got control
Every time you think you've got control
Sh-sh-she got it
The lyrics of Meat Loaf's song "Like A Rose" talk about a woman who is as dangerous as she is irresistible. The singer compares this woman to a rose, which is symbolic of something beautiful yet also has thorns that can prick someone who gets too close. He warns that trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes, but he still finds himself infatuated with her. The lyrics suggest that this woman is not to be underestimated, as she will cut you, kick you when you're down, and leave once she's had her way with you. However, the singer cannot resist her, even if it leads him to trouble.
The song seems to be an ode to the dangers of loving someone who is unpredictable and not fully trustworthy. The metaphor of the rose is used to convey the idea that even something seemingly beautiful can have dark sides that hurt those who get too close. The singer seems to realize this but is also drawn to this woman, unable to resist her charms. The chorus declares that every time he thinks he has control, she will take it away from him, making it clear that the woman in question is in charge of the relationship.
