After the commercial success of Bat Out of Hell and Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell, and earning a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", Meat Loaf nevertheless experienced some difficulty establishing a steady career within the United States. The key to this success was his popularity in Europe, especially in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He received the 1994 Brit Award in the United Kingdom for best-selling album and single. He appeared in the 1997 film Spice World and he ranked 23rd for the number of weeks spent on the UK charts in 2006. He ranks 96th on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". Meat Loaf appeared in over 50 films and television shows, sometimes as himself or as characters resembling his stage persona. His film roles include Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and Robert Paulsen in Fight Club (1999). His early stage work included dual roles in the original Broadway cast of The Rocky Horror Show. He also appeared in the musical Hair, both on and Off-Broadway.

This record of this music has been goin' on all afternoon
and I'm sick and tired of it. If it doesn't stop I'm calling the police!)
You got me on the run, you got it your way
Now I'm feeling pretty good and I'm beginning to sweat
Your love is so fine, it's got me feelin' alright
Going out of my mind, I got to have you tonight
The girl's so deep inside, like blood in my veins
Never lets me hide, now I'm going insane
It makes me climb the walls, bite my nails to the bone
It's always by my side, it never leaves me alone
[Chorus]
When it's time to get tough, I'm masculine (masculine, masculine)
When she wants to play rough, I'm masculine (masculine, masculine)
Masculine
I know that I'm a man from the spark in my soul
It can make me so hot, you got out of control
Grab her by the hair, drag her back to your cave
It's what makes a man a man, people always stay the same
[Chorus]
I'm masculine
(Masculine, masculine)
Anytime, anyplace, anyway, in the heat of the night and in the dark of the day
Anytime, anyplace, anyway
When it's time to get tough, I'm masculine (masculine, masculine)
When she wants to make love, I'm masculine - what d'you say?
When she wants to make love, I'm masculine
When she wants to play rough, I'm masculine (masculine, masculine)
When she wants to make love, I'm masculine (masculine, masculine)
If you push me I'll shove, I'm masculine
When she wants to play rough, I'm masculine
When she wants to make love, I'm masculine...
The song "Masculine" by Meat Loaf is a song about confidence, sexual prowess, and masculinity. The lyrics describe how the persona feels powerful and in control when he's with his lover. He loves the feeling of her love, which he compares to blood in his veins, and how it drives him to the brink of insanity. The chorus is essentially an affirming statement of his masculinity that he uses to remind himself of his strength and power as a man. He describes himself as someone who is always ready to get tough, both in and out of the bedroom.
The song has a controversial overtone to it, as it puts forward a very narrow definition of what it means to be masculine. It implies that men should be tough, aggressive, and always in charge. The lyrics promote traditional gender roles that place men in positions of dominance, objectifying women in the process.
Despite its potentially problematic themes, the song's catchy chorus and infectious melody make it a fan favorite among Meat Loaf's followers. It is a quintessential example of the theatrical rock that Meat Loaf is known for, full of bombast, over-the-top theatrics, and soaring vocal harmonies.
