No Matter What
Meat Loaf feat. Patti Russo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The locusts are singing, the sun is red
It's gotten so late somehow
There's gonna be trouble, you know what they said
We should have been home by now
We should have been home by now

The thunder is rolling
The sky is black
It's gotten so dark somehow
There's gonna be danger
God I wish we were back
We should have been home by now
We should have been home by now

(Woo, woo, ah)

No matter what they tell us
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach us
What we believe is true

No matter what they call us
However they attack
No matter where they take us
We'll find our own way back

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not
I know I'll love forever
I know no matter what

If only tears were laughter
If only night was day
If only prayers were answered
Then we would hear God say

No matter what they tell you
No matter what they do
No matter what they teach you
What you believe is true

And I will keep you safe and strong
And sheltered from the storm
No matter where it's barren
A dream is being born (a dream is being born)

No matter who they follow
No matter where they lead
No matter how they judge us
I'll be everyone you need

No matter if the sun don't shine
Or if the skies are blue (if the skies are blue)
No matter what the ending
My life began with you

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not (I can't be what I'm not)
I know this love's forever
I know no matter what

I can't deny what I believe
I can't be what I'm not (I can't be what I'm not)
I know this love's forever
That's all that matters now
No matter what

(Woo, woo, woo, woo)

The thunder is rolling
The sky is black
It's gotten so dark somehow

There's gonna be danger
God I wish we were back
We should have been home by now

We should have been home by now
Now

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "Home by Now/No Matter What" by Meat Loaf sets a mood of impending doom as the locusts sing, the sun is red and it's late. The singer wishes they were home as they have heard that there's going to be trouble. The following verse adds to the ominous tone with thunder rolling, a black sky, and more danger looming. The chorus reiterates the importance of valuing one's beliefs and staying true to oneself no matter what others say or do. The verses pick up again with the singer wishing for laughter instead of tears and for prayers to be answered while remaining steadfast in their beliefs. The final chorus closes the song with a declaration of love and the reaffirmation to never stop believing in what you hold true.

The song tells a story of someone who is seeking refuge from the world with another person, someone who is committed to keeping them safe, and who will always be there for them, no matter what. The lyrics show how the world can be dangerous, unpredictable, and unforgiving, but the singer believes in their love and in a bright future. The song can also be viewed as a metaphor for life with the singer being everyone who needs someone to help them weather the storms of the world, and the other person symbolizes a guiding light amidst the darkness.

A+

Penda Fen

Brilliant version. Though I always found it odd that the profane and transgressive songwriter Steinman wrote such a chaste-sounding religious number. Never quite got my head round it.

Brenda Martin

I think Jim Steinman was on his “best behavior” because he was writing with Andrew Lloyd Weber, someone he would have wanted to impress. I was shocked as well he made this beautiful song.

Penda Fen

@Brenda Martin Steiny behaving himself...perish the thought😅fwiw I think his more outre work is also beautiful, and that's the genius of Jim--he could move through camp and silliness and vulgarity to find the lush gorgeous sublime element on the other side (something ALW never managed imo).
