1. A Spanish pop band founded in 1981
2. A Dutch Post-Punk/ New Wave band founded in 1978
(1)The Spanish Mecano began as a Spanish language synth-pop (in Spanish música tecno) band from Madrid, Spain. Brothers Nacho Cano and José María Cano, along with singer Ana Torroja, formed the band in 1981. Mecano’s debut coincided with La Movida Madrileña, a sociocultural movement that occurred in Spain during the 1980’s.
Soon after forming, they achieved wide-spread popularity with their debut single, “Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar”. Nacho Cano branched out into producing other bands, and both he and his brother wrote songs for other pop up-starts. Mecano had another hit in 1986 with “Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte”. In 1991, the band members decided to set out on solo careers.
Prior to their international success in 1986, Mecano had three successful albums in Spain and Europe. However, it was not until the release of their 1986 album, Entre el Cielo y el Suelo that they achieved international success beyond the Spanish-speaking world. One of their most important songs, “Hijo de la Luna”, was covered as an aria by one of Opera’s greatest contemporary singers, Montserrat Caballé. Their follow-up album, Descanso Dominical, produced their biggest single ever, “Mujer Contra Mujer”, which deals with a lesbian relationship, seen through the eyes of a male friend, who only later realizes what is going on. The song was recorded in French, English, and Italian, giving Mecano their first truly global hit.
2. Mecano is a Dutch Punk/New Wave band founded in 1977 by Dirk Polak. Post-Punk from 1978 to mid 80's, a break, but now alive again. Official site: http://www.mecano.ws/
Dalai Lama
Mecano Lyrics

The song "Dalai Lama" by Mecano is a poetic and politically charged story about the life and struggles of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political leader of Tibet. The first verse introduces us to the Dalai Lama's birthplace, the forbidden country of Tibet, and his divine status as the reincarnation of a God. The second verse describes the preparations for his journey to assume his position as the new leader, and how he was discovered by the Lamas through an oracle's design. The chorus repeats the name of the Dalai Lama, emphasizing his importance and sacredness.
The third verse delves into the political turmoil of Tibet, where the Chinese army invades and suppresses the religious and cultural traditions of the Tibetan people. The invaders burn down religious structures and oppress the population under the guise of progress and revolution. The "king of the mountains" or the Dalai Lama himself, is forced to flee his country and hide his identity, dressed as a beggar. The final verse addresses the lack of international support for Tibet, especially from countries with no strategic interest in the region, and the irony of the Nobel prize given to those who perpetuate war and violence.
Overall, "Dalai Lama" is a tribute to the figure of the Dalai Lama, his spiritual importance to the Tibetan people, and a criticism of the Chinese invasion and international apathy towards it.

Lyrics (in English) fpr this song: Dalai Lama
He was born in a forbidden country
lost at the foot of a mountain,
they say he's a reincarnated God.
In the mystery of a great monastery,
The Lamas are preparing for a trip,
they're going in search of their future Great Lord.
Following orders from a special oracle
they swept the mountains
and found a boy.
He, who had a good memory, was able to remember
his prayer beads and his bell
and even his emissary.
Ay, Dalai Lama, Dalai Lama, Dalai
Ay, Dalai Lama, Ay, Dalai Dalai
Ay, Dalai.
Soon the sky turned into a wasps nest
full with "yellow ones", flying to the ground
and there was that fear that precedes an invasion.
Like tree leaves, the "red stars"
fell on the Lhasa Valley
to free the people from their religion.
In the name of progress and revolution
they burnt traditions and trampled the honor.
The king of the mountains had to escape
dressed like a beggar
and with his soul around his belly button.
Ay, Dalai Lama, Dalai Lama, Dalai
Ay, Dalai Lama, Ay, Dalai Dalai
Ay, Dala.
Because there wasn't any oil involved, there weren't any friends at sea,
Nations they let your little boat sink.
Nobel laureate in war time,
Nobel Peace prize.
Ay, Dalai Lama, Dalai Lama, Dalai
Ay, Dalai Lama, Ay, Dalai Dalai
Ay, Dalai Lama, Dalai Lama, Dalai
Ay, Dalai Lama, Ay, Dalai Dalai,
Oh, Dalai.
