Green Horn
Mechanicy Shanty Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Swoją drogą szedłem przez świat,
W sercu zawsze tkwiła uparta myśl,
By za głosem morza iść.
A więc śpiewam: "Żegnaj Carling Ford
I żegnaj nam Green Horn,
Będę myślał o tobie w dzień i noc,
Aby kiedyś wrócić znów".
W każde z wielkich siedmiu sztormowych mórz
Wychodziłem, bo zmuszał mnie los.
Każdy w porcie ode mnie usłyszeć mógł:
"Nigdy więcej morza już!".
A więc śpiewam: "Żegnaj Carling Ford
I żegnaj nam Green Horn,
Będę myślał o tobie w dzień i noc,
Aby kiedyś wrócić tu,
Aby kiedyś wrócić znów".
Mam dziewczynę, słodką Mary Doyle,
Dom swój również ma na Green Horn,
Sercem, duszą pragnie zatrzymać mnie,
żebym w morze nie zwiał jej.
A więc śpiewam: "Żegnaj Carling Ford
I żegnaj nam Green Horn,
Będę myślał o tobie w dzień i noc,
Aby kiedyś wrócić tu,
Aby kiedyś wrócić znów".
Życiem szczur lądowy kieruje sam,
Chce - zostanie lub pójdzie w dal,
Ale kiedy morze wejdzie w krew,
Gdy zawoła, pójdziesz wnet.
A więc śpiewam: "Żegnaj Carling Ford
I żegnaj nam Green Horn,
Będę myślał o tobie w dzień i noc,
Aby kiedyś wrócić tu,
Aby kiedyś wrócić znów".
A więc śpiewam: "Żegnaj Carling Ford
I żegnaj nam Green Horn,
Będę myślał o tobie w dzień i noc,
Aby kiedyś wrócić tu,
Aby kiedyś wrócić znów".
The lyrics to Mechanicy Shanty's song "Green Horn" tell the story of a young sailor who sets out to sea at 16 years old, driven by a stubborn desire to follow the call of the ocean. He faces storms and adversity on his voyages but is always drawn back to the sea, bidding farewell to Carling Ford and his love, Mary Doyle, as he sets off once again. The chorus repeats the goodbye to Carling Ford and Green Horn, with the singer expressing his longing to return someday.
The lyrics are a classic example of a sea shanty, a genre of work song traditionally sung by sailors while performing labor-intensive tasks onboard ships. The repetitive structure and catchy melody of the chorus would have made it easier for sailors to keep time and coordinate their efforts, while also providing a sense of camaraderie and shared experience. The themes of longing, adventure, and the power of the sea are common in sea shanties and reflect the unique culture and lifestyle of seafaring communities.

Miałem wtedy, ech!, szesnaście te lat,
I had sixteen years back then, oh!
Swoją drogą szedłem przez świat,
I was walking my own path through the world
W sercu zawsze tkwiła uparta myśl,
My heart always held a stubborn thought
By za głosem morza iść.
To follow the voice of the sea
A więc śpiewam: "Żegnaj Carling Ford
So I sing: Farewell, Carling Ford
I żegnaj nam Green Horn,
Farewell to you, Green Horn
Będę myślał o tobie w dzień i noc,
I will think of you day and night
Aby kiedyś wrócić tu,
To come back here someday
Aby kiedyś wrócić znów".
To come back again
W każde z wielkich siedmiu sztormowych mórz
In each of the great seven stormy seas
Wychodziłem, bo zmuszał mnie los.
I went out because fate forced me
Każdy w porcie ode mnie usłyszeć mógł:
Everyone in the port could hear me say:
"Nigdy więcej morza już!".
"Never again the sea!"
Mam dziewczynę, słodką Mary Doyle,

Dom swój również ma na Green Horn,

Sercem, duszą pragnie zatrzymać mnie,

So I won't vanish into the sea
Życiem szczur lądowy kieruje sam,
A land rat guides his own life
Chce - zostanie lub pójdzie w dal,
He wants - to stay or to go far away
Ale kiedy morze wejdzie w krew,
But when the sea gets into your blood
Gdy zawoła, pójdziesz wnet.
When it calls, you'll go right away
A więc śpiewam: "Żegnaj Carling Ford
So I sing: Farewell, Carling Ford
I żegnaj nam Green Horn,
Farewell to you, Green Horn
Będę myślał o tobie w dzień i noc,
I will think of you day and night
Aby kiedyś wrócić tu,
To come back here someday
Aby kiedyś wrócić znów".

Farewell to Carlingford
When I was young and in my prime
And could wander wild and free
There was always a longing in my mind
To follow the call of the sea
So, I'll sing farewell to Carlingford
And farewell to Greenore
And I'll think of you both day and night
Until I return once more
Until I return once more
On all of the stormy seven seas
I have sailed before the mast
And on every voyage I ever made
I swore it would be my last
So, I'll sing farewell to Carlingford
And farewell to Greenore
And I'll think of you both day and night
Until I return once more
Until I return once more
Now, I had a girl called Mary Doyle
And she lived in Greenore
And the foremost thought was in her mind
Was to keep me safe on shore
So, I'll sing farewell to Carlingford
And farewell to Greenore
And I'll think of you both day and night
Until I return once more
Until I return once more
Now, the landsman's life is all his own
He can go or he can stay
But when the sea gets in your blood
When she calls, you must obey
