Underwater
Medication Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen when I say to you
Be happy if you got it
Hold my breath and past the test
I'm living underwater
On and on it seems so long
I wonder should I count the days
I'm waiting
The me that you know is just a fuckin scar
The me that you know doesn't live here anymore
Wonder if you'll follow through
You really have to want it
Don't hesitate or love to hate
Be happy if you saw it
In my vague reality
I never thought to ask your name
I'm waiting
The chance to choose we chose
Nobody knows nobody knows
Falling to pieces
Nothing to say
I see my life is slipping away
Count all the reasons

I cannot breathe
I see my my life is running from me

Overall Meaning

The song 'Underwater' by Medication portrays a sense of despair and feeling trapped. The opening lines, "Be happy if you got it. Hold my breath and past the test. I'm living underwater." sets the tone of the song with a melancholic feeling. It refers to an individual who's struggling to breathe and is living submerge underwater, feeling suffocated and helpless. The following line, "On and on it seems so long, I wonder should I count the days. I'm waiting," suggests that the individual has spent a prolonged period feeling overwhelmed with little hope of things getting better. The next lines, "The me that you know is just a fuckin scar. The me that you know doesn't live here anymore," indicates a transformational process of an individual that they have gone through, and the person they used to be has disappeared, and all that remains is a scar.

The chorus, "Falling to pieces, nothing to say, I see my life is slipping away. Count all the reasons, I cannot breathe. I see my life is running from me," hints towards the person's inability to cope with everyday challenges and feeling as if their life is crashing down, along with a feeling of helplessness. The last verse "In my vague reality, I never thought to ask your name. I'm waiting. The chance to choose we chose, nobody knows. nobody knows," reinforces the sense of confusion and hopelessness. The song is a portrayal of how it feels to be submerged in overwhelming emotions, drowning and feeling disconnected from life.
