E a fruta verde esborra a sede
Agora peitos e poses e pêlos e cores no cabelo
E caras e bocas, paladares, rapazes e cenas no espelho
Escorre o suco vermelho, e o segredo?
O segredo não é segredo mais
Virginia, a rua esta lhe ensinando a viver
Virginia, tem hora marcada pra se vender
Virginia, não deu tempo nem de crescer
Seu olhar aparente não é inocente
Na vida se vende pra sobreviver
Tudo começou quando era pequeninha
Seu padrasto mandava abaixar a calcinha
E fazia sua festinha particular
Virginia começou a se revoltar
O trauma invade a alma e cala o olhar
Cade "minina"?
Cade "minina"?
Foi pra esquina e conheceu outras meninas
Alcool, Craque, Cola e Cocaina
Cresce e aparece na vitrine
Cade "minina"?
Agora adulta a velha prostituta desgastada
No registro: "Pai desconhecido"
The song "Virgínia" by Icelandic artist Björk's album Medulla delves into the topic of young girls being lured into prostitution and the sad reality of their lives on the streets. The song is in Portuguese and starts by talking about Virgínia, who seems to have adopted a fairy tale mindset, where she is surrounded by fairies in tight skirts dancing on the sidewalks. However, this notion of innocence is soon shattered as the lyrics reveal the harsh reality of Virgínia's life. She relies on selling her body to make ends meet, and her looks and charm are her only salvation. She is trapped in a world where she is a commodity, where her innocence is long gone, and where her only choice is to survive by adapting to the environment around her.
The lyrics describe the transformation of Virgínia from an innocent girl to a prostituted woman who no longer has control over her body. The trauma she experienced at a young age, where her stepfather abused her, followed her throughout her life, and culminated in her becoming a prostitute. Her situation is made even worse when it is revealed that her daughter is also on the streets, following in her footsteps. The iconic line "Na vida se vende pra sobreviver" (In life, we sell to survive) encapsulates the bleak and brutal reality of Virgínia's life and the harsh circumstances that have led her down the path she is on.
The song ends with a haunting repetition of the name "Virgínia" and the realization that her story is not unique, that there are many others like her fighting to survive on the streets.
