Roses
Meg &Dia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Turn around there's those eyes again.
Turn around fake indifference and I.
Watch their cold, dark silhouettes disappear.
A hundred bodies fill this room.
And all their faces overdone.
Pain is foreign, foreign to us.

I don't even know you.
You won't even know I'm gone.
Was it something I did wrong?

Roses, roses cold.
Roses, roses sold out.

Turn around reds and whites again.
I'd sell my kicks for one more low tar.
Fevers hand in hand with shoelace bracelets.
Why are some girls so naive?
He didn't unbutton your blouse to see.
A better view of your heart.
Oh yeah, can't blame you for trying.

I don't even know you.
You won't even know I'm gone.
Was it something I did wrong?

Roses, roses cold.
Roses, roses sold out.

Sing it soft.
Make it slow.
Apples parachute
the boys back down.
Fill it up.
Overflow.
A new, improved modern way to feel.

I don't even know you.

You won't even know I'm gone.
Was it something I did wrong?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Meg & Dia's song "Roses" are reflective of the emptiness and lack of real human connection that can exist in modern society. The lyrics describe a crowded room full of people, but despite the number of bodies present, the singer feels isolated and disconnected. The use of the imagery of "cold, dark silhouettes" and "faces overdone" suggest that the people in the room are superficial and fake, creating an atmosphere of alienation and emotional distance.

The second verse of the song takes a more specific focus on the experiences of young women, with lines such as "Why are some girls so naive?" and "He didn't unbutton your blouse to see / A better view of your heart." These lines suggest a sense of exploitation and objectification of young women, with their bodies being used for the pleasure of others while their emotions and inner lives are disregarded.

The recurring refrain of "Roses, roses cold / Roses, roses sold out" further emphasizes the theme of superficiality and a lack of genuine emotion or connection. The use of the word "sold out" suggests that even the most personal, intimate experiences have become commodified and commercialized in modern society.

Overall, the lyrics of "Roses" are a commentary on the ways in which contemporary society can foster a sense of disconnection and lack of true human connection, particularly for young people.

They were a criminally underrated band. I met Meg and Dia both at the Warped Tour in Atlanta in, I think, 2006. They were selling their CDs and giving out Doghouse Records samplers. Later that day, I also met their then guitarist Kenji. A great group of people.

@MrJeremytpage

I also met them in warped tour when I was a security guard.

@ThemcpeMaster53

@brunoaugustocorreaandrade7969

yeah, they're one of my favorite bands of all, all of their music are incredible

@thesaxon5847

(In my opinion obviously) I think they could or would be more deserving of more recognition if their comeback wasn't such sanitised and typical pop or triple J worthy alt-pop. What was good about them was their version of emo-pop/pop-rock, which was dissolved as their albums went along until their current stuff which could have been performed by anyone. Get rid of the synths, electronic drums and get back to the guitar centric music of the early days I say!
