Being an admirer of Elvis Presley, Megas welcomed the arrival of rock & roll to Iceland by 1956, although his interest in music had to be postponed while he attended grammar school in 1960.
While he was young, he studied piano and showed skill at painting. He wrote outrageous short stories for the school papers and in 1968 he also published the sheet music and lyrics to 14 songs, many of which would be released on his first records. As a young bohemian writer, he was inspired by Bob Dylan and Ray Davies, and embarked into songwriting, but his works were not copies of the American or British idols, but in fact, his songs were very original.
At the beginning of the seventies, his music works were not accessible to the audience as Megas only performed them to his friends of the left-wing circles. However in 1972, Icelandic students in Oslo, Norway helped him release his first album, in which diabolic and satiric lyrics were accompanied by a mild acoustic music played by Norwegian folk musicians. This work caused controversy and was his music was banned by the Icelandic national radio, but Megas became a cult figure in the growing alternative scene.
In 1973, as Megas found it difficult to release further albums, he published his verses and music in 3 books.
When his original lyrics were performed with the electric rock band Judas in 1975, Megas managed to reach a broader audience. Several of those songs lampooned the Icelandic cultural legacy, including his two next albums: Millilending (1975) and Fram og aftur blindgötuna (1976), which were much heavier than the first one. He focused on topics that challenged all of Icelandic society’s taboos with references made to classical literature and a sarcastic revisionist history. His work polarized the audience, splitting them into a hostile minority and an enthusiastic majority. His songs remarkable poetry and use of Icelandic language proved a novel way to boost Icelandic rock and roll.
In 1977 Megas released Á bleikum náttkjólum with the accompaniment of Spilverk þjóðanna, a very popular folk-rock band. This album was voted the best Icelandic album ever made, and with a variety of music styles, it features what many critics considered the first Icelandic punk song. By the end of the seventies, Megas was perceived as a provocateur and his important roll in the Icelandic rock scene turned him into a reference for future artists.
Then, he released a children’s song album and a double live album and withdrew from the Icelandic music and started working as a dock worker and graduated from arts school.
By 1983 reappeared in the Icelandic music scene by collaborating with other bands and playing as a guest musicians on several albums.
Towards 1985 joined KUKL in a new project was named MEGAKUKL and toured all over Iceland recording around 20 songs which still remain as unpublished material.
After seven years of absence, his solo career was resumed in 1986 with the release of Í góðri trú.
Three albums by Megas have featured Björk as backing vocalist; Loftmynd (1987), Höfuðlausnir (1988) and Hættuleg hljómsveit og glæpakvendið Stella (1990). Björk also sings with Megas on few songs on the live album Greinilegur púls (2006) which was recorded in 1991.

Magnús Þór Jónsson (fæddur 7. apríl 1945 í Reykjavík á Íslandi) er íslenskur tónlistarmaður, dægurlagahöfundur, rithöfundur og myndlistarmaður, hann er best þekktur undir listamannsnafninu Megas.
Megas ólst upp í Norðurmýrinni í Reykjavík á eftirstríðsárunum. Hann gekk í Austurbæjarskólann og svo í Menntaskólann í Reykjavík, þaðan sem hann lauk stúdentsprófi árið 1965. Þá vann hann um hríð sem gjaldkeri í Landsbankanum, en hélt svo til Noregs til að stunda nám í þjóðháttafræði við háskólann í Osló.
Megas byrjaði snemma að fást við lagasmíðar og textagerð, og samdi meðal annars lagið um Gamla sorrí Grána fyrir fermingu. Áður en fyrsta hljómplata hans kom út í Noregi árið 1972 komu út eftir hann tvö hefti með textum, nótum og teikningum. Þau hétu einfaldlega Megas I (1968) og Megas II (1970). Árið 1973 gaf hann heftin tvö út aftur, endurskoðuð, og bætti þriðja heftinu við, Megas III. Margt af því efni sem birtist í heftunum átti síðar eftir að rata inn á plöturnar hans.
Á áttunda áratugnum gaf Megas út sex hljómplötur. Tónlist hans hristi upp í samfélaginu og mörgum var ekki hlýtt til „guðlastarans“ og „dópistans“ Megasar. Eftir fræga tónleika í MH haustið 1978, Drög að sjálfsmorði, sem einnig voru gefnir út á tvöfaldri plötu, tóku við nokkur ár þar sem Megas lét lítið fara fyrir sér opinberlega. Hann fór í áfengismeðferð skömmu eftir Sjálfsmorðstónleikana, en eftir þá gengu þær sögur að hann hefði fyrirfarið sér. Að meðferðinni lokinni útvegaði hann sér verkamannavinnu og stundaði myndlistarnám í Myndlista- og handíðaskólanum. Í nokkur ár lét hann sér nægja að fylgjast með rokkinu af hliðarlínunni, en um þetta leyti var pönkið loksins að koma til landsins. Árið 1983 steig hann aftur á svið, í þetta sinn með Íkarusi, hljómsveit Tolla Morthens, og söng með þeim nokkur lög. Auk þess söng hann lög í félagi við Bubba Morthens inn á plötu hans, Fingraför. Megas gaf svo sjálfur ekki út plötu fyrr en árið 1986, en þá höfðu sjö ár liðið frá því að síðasta plata hans kom út. Þá var heildarsafn hans einnig endurútgefið með einhverjum viðbótum. Síðan þá hefur Megas sent frá sér nýjar plötur með nokkuð reglulegu millibili. Níu plötur Megasar má finna á lista yfir hundrað bestu plötur tuttugustu aldar á Íslandi í bókinni Eru ekki allir í stuði (2001) eftir Dr. Gunna.
Megas hefur ekki takmarkað sig við dægurlagaformið. Hann byrjaði snemma að skrifa smásögur, sem sumar birtust í Tímariti Máls og menningar á sjöunda áratugnum. Árið 1990 kom út eftir hann og Þórunni Valdimarsdóttur Sól í Norðurmýri - píslarsaga úr Austurbæ, sem byggir á æskuminningum hans. Fyrsta skáldsaga hans, Björn og Sveinn leit svo dagsins ljós árið 1994. Hann hefur einnig skrifað leikrit, þýtt og staðfært og svo mætti lengi telja. Safn dægurlagatexta hans kom út árið 1991 í bókinni Textar.
Sjónbeinendur Megasar eru yfirleitt úr neðri stigum samfélagsins. Þeir eru rónar, dópistar og aðrir níðingar.
Í textum sínum tekst Megas á við þær miklu þjóðfélagsbreytingar sem áttu sér stað á Íslandi allan seinni hluta tuttugustu aldarinnar. Á fyrstu árum ferilsins voru túlkanir hans á Íslandssögunni og útleggingar á boðskap kristninnar mörgum þyrnir í augum, og sum laga hans fengu ekki spilun í Ríkisútvarpinu, sem þá var eina útvarpsstöðin á Íslandi. Fjandskapurinn gekk svo langt hjá sumum að árið 1978 sömdu Búbónisbræður, þeir Jónas og Jón Múli Árnasynir leikrit, 'Valmúinn springur út á nóttunni', sem virtist gera út á það eitt að gera lítið úr persónu Megasar, en Jón Múli skrifaði nokkrar lesendagreinar í Þjóðviljann veturinn 1976-1977 þar sem hann varaði við þessum manni. Á þessum tíma var það svall Megasar sem truflaði, og vissulega var það mikið. Þessar raddir þögnuðu þó smám saman eftir að Megas dró sig út af sjónarsviðinu í kringum 1980.
Þegar hann var svo kominn vel af stað aftur á síðari hluta níunda áratugarins, var enn og aftur farið að slúðra um hann. Í þetta skipti stóð það ýmist í tengslum við meinta samkynhneigð hans og ást hans til barna. Í nokkrum lögum frá þessum tíma ber ástir til barna á góma, í ýmsum myndum þó. Hvassaleitisdóninn fjallar um flassara sem börnum þótti helst standa ógn af á þeim tíma. Litlir sætir strákar vekja enn hneykslun góðborgara þó lagið sé orðið meira en 15 ára gamalt, en í því syngur hann um hvernig kvenkynið er lævíst og svikult, og það að litlir sætir strákar hafi löngum reynst best. Margir réðu því af textanum að Megas væri samkynhneigður barnaníðingur. Megas ferðaðist einnig til Tælands um þetta leyti og mörg laga hans, sérstaklega af Höfuðlausnum, bera áhrifum þaðan glöggt vitni. Þar má meðal annars finna lagið Drengirnir í Bangkok, þar sem fjallað er um blíðu drengjanna þar. Vinur Megasar kom með honum frá Tælandi, 16 ára gamall tælenskur piltur. Fólki þótti því ljóst að innistæða væri fyrir kjaftasögunum. Þetta dugði til að vekja hneykslun góðborgaranna enn á ný - fólks sem tekið hafði Megas í sátt eftir að hann hætti mesta sukkinu.
Það verður þó ekki fram hjá því horft, að umfjöllun Megasar um þá anga samfélagsins sem ekki mátti ræða, tabúin, höfðu heilmikil áhrif í samfélagsumræðu á Íslandi. Það er líklega óhætt að segja að hann hafi verið tíu árum á undan öðrum að benda Íslendingum á að til sé fólk sem ber ást til barna sem lítið á skylt við kristilegan kærleik. Eins má þakka honum umfjöllunina um rónana í textum hans á áttunda áratugnum, en um þá var ekki rætt opinberlega fram að því. Í báðum þessum tilvikum braut Megas ísinn.
