Raised by her father in the small town of Roberta, Georgia, Meiko first stepped in front of an audience at the age of eight, singing “White Christmas” for parishioners of a Southern Baptist church. At eighteen, Meiko left her hometown to showcase her talents to a wider audience. After a brief stop in Miami, she set down in Los Angeles and began her career in earnest, playing venues all over Southern California and writing at a prolific pace. She performed (and bartended) at Hollywood's Hotel Café (where she still performs regularly).
Meiko is one-quarter Japanese, on her maternal grandmother's side; in an attempt to get in touch with their Japanese heritage, she and her sister, designer Kelly Nishimoto, adopted the nicknames Meiko and Keiko.
When The Doors Close

And how you make me feel brand new like a pair of shoes
That fit my feet just right
I wanna wear you out tonight
And they say, you're not for me
But they don't know you like I do
They say, that we'll never make it
When the doors close
All I do is dream of how
We can leave it all behind
Parents friends are to the moon
We'll leave it all behind
Boy, they say, you're not for me
They don't know you like I do
They say, that we'll never make it
But they don't know how it goes
When the doors close
When the doors close
They say, you're not for me
They don't know you like I do
They say, that we'll never make it
But they don't know how it goes
When the doors close
They say, you're not for me
They don't know you like I do
They say, that we'll never make it
But they don't know how it goes
The lyrics of Meiko's song "When The Doors Close" describe a deep infatuation with another person. The singer of the song is consumed with thoughts of this person, and they feel like they are a perfect fit for one another, like a pair of shoes. Despite what others say about the relationship being doomed to fail, the singer is convinced that the connection they share is special and unique.
The lyrics are about a romantic relationship that is facing obstacles - the disapproval of outside forces like parents and friends. The two people involved feel like they have to hide their relationship, waiting until "the doors close" to be able to express their feelings and be together without fear of judgment. The singer encourages the other person not to listen to what others say about their relationship but to trust their own feelings and instincts.
Overall, the song is about the power of love to overcome obstacles and the importance of trusting one's own feelings and instincts when it comes to matters of the heart. The lyrics are simple yet effective in conveying the deep emotions involved in a new and exciting romance and the fear of losing it due to external pressures.
