The Flower of Carnage
Meiko Kaji /Kill Bill OST/ Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Begrieving snow falls in the dead morning
Stray dog's howls and the footsteps of Geta pierce the air
I walk with the weight of the Milky Way on my shoulders
But an umbrella that holds onto the darkness is all there is.
I'm a woman who walks at the brink of life and death
Who's emptied my tears many moons ago
All the compassion tears and dreams
The snowy nights and tomorrow hold no meaning
I've immersed my body in the river of vengeance
And thrown away my womanhood many moons ago
On the behalf of heaven, they're our soldiers, the loyal, invincible and brave.
Now it's time for them to leave the country of their
Parents their hearts buoyed by encouraging voices
They are solemnly resolved not to return alive, without victory
Here at home, the citizens wait for you.
In foreign lands, the brave troops
Instead of kindness from someone
I do not care about
I rather prefer selfishness from you my beloved.

Oh, is the world a dream or an illusion?
I am all alone in jail.

Overall Meaning

The Flower of Carnage is a hauntingly beautiful song by Meiko Kaji from the Kill Bill OST. It tells the story of a woman who walks at the brink of life and death, having given up her tears, dreams, and womanhood many moons ago. She has immersed herself in the river of vengeance and is now all alone in jail. As she walks in the dead morning, the sound of a stray dog's howls and the footsteps of Geta pierce the air. She bears the weight of the Milky Way on her shoulders, but all she has is an umbrella that holds onto the darkness. The snowy nights and tomorrow hold no meaning for her.

The second verse speaks of soldiers leaving for war, with their hearts buoyed by encouraging voices. They are solemnly resolved not to return alive without victory. The citizens wait for them at home, while in foreign lands, the brave troops wait for kindness from their loved ones. The woman in jail longs for selfishness from her beloved instead of kindness from someone else. She questions whether the world is a dream or an illusion as she faces her solitude.

This song is a beautiful representation of the pain and loneliness that comes with revenge. The lyrics are poetic and evoke strong emotions. Meiko Kaji's haunting vocals add to the melancholic mood of the song.

Funeral snow is falling in the dead morning
Howling of a stray dog, the creaking of geta clogs
Carrying the weight of fate, I walk with my eyes fixes
Embracing the darkness, only with a Janome-umbrella
I go my own way of life, long ago I've thrown away my tears

At the river I turn around and see the lights of the journey fade
A moveless frozen crane, howling rain and wind
My stray hair reflects on the surface of the cold water
Not even showing tears, only with a Janome-umbrella
I go my own way of grudge, long ago I've thrown away my feelings

Duty, sympathy, tears, dreams
Tomorrow and yesterday are words of no meaning to me
I yield my body to the river of grudge
Long ago I've thrown away my womanhood

It’s about a woman on a quest for revenge. Fitting!

O-ren was certainly the most martially capable mark on the hitlist.

"Elle" was nothing but Beatrix-Lite, poisoning her master because she couldn't hack it.

"Budd" did some things I still don't really understand, but I think part of him wanted the death he deserved.

"Sofia" was nothing but the Logistics Dept.

"Vernita" actually wanted to live for her family, and incidentally, did pretty damn good squaring off against Beatrix. The quip about her weapon of choice being a "butcher knife" gets me everytime 😂

O-ren was on the edge of winning the duel, until her thigh was cut; cutting the legs is highly unusual, and my guess is O-ren's kimono was restricting her footwork there. At that point, it was literally a coin toss. Another issue working against O-ren is her using a "shirasaya" in a duel. Shirasaya are meant to store the blade, once all the fixtures and mountings (koshirae) have been removed, the bare blade is pinned to a plain wood handle and stored inside the saya. Obviously, this is NOT ideal for a duel against a sword that's renowned for it's sharpness and durability.
