Fiona was featured on Reggae Gold 2008 with the Supa Dups-produced "Somebody Come Get Me". Her debut album The Bridge was released in the summer of 2009. She worked on the album with Future Cut, Vada Nobles, Stereotypes, J. Phoenix, Peter Wade and Salaam Remi. The debut single "Give It to Me Right" was released to radio stations on February 28, 2009, and peaked at #20 on Billboard's Canadian Hot 100 and #41 on the UK Singles Chart. The second single, "It Kills Me", became her breakout song on the Billboard Hot 100 where it cracked the Top 50, along with hitting #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song earned Fiona a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Her second album, The MF Life, was released through the SRC Records and Universal Republic on March 20, 2012 after several delays. The Break Down The Walls Songfacts reports Fiona told Billboard magazine that her goal with The MF Life was to give an "honest" depiction of her life and how things have changed from her debut set, The Bridge.
In 2002, Fiona was briefly involved with girl group X-Quisite. Early in her career, she would perform at nightclubs in Toronto. In 2005, Fiona traveled to Los Angeles, California, in search of a recording contract. According to Fiona, record labels "loved" the way she looked and sung, but "knew that the minute I worked with them or would have signed with them, they would have tried to change me into someone else completely different. That was something that I didn't want to do." She went on to co-write songs for recording artists Rihanna and Kardinal Offishall. Fiona also recorded the reggae song "Somebody Come Get Me" under the stage name Syren Hall, which was included in the Reggae Gold 2008 compilation album. Entrepreneur Steve Rifkind discovered and signed Fiona to SRC Records and Universal Motown in 2007. She went on to tour with Kanye West in his Glow in the Dark Tour.

But not just any crazy
It's the kind you feel when you love somebody
And I know that my baby
Is calling somebody else baby
And I can't sit still, look how gone it got me
Who knew that my heart could have a bruise?
I'm hurting and he don't even care
It's 4 a.m. and my lover won't answer
He's probably somewhere with a dancer
Sippin' champagne while I'm in his bed
It's four a.m. and I think I might lose it
This mu'fucker thinking I'm stupid
He must've bumped his head
Don't he know it's 4 a.m.
Standing here and I'm getting heated
Pourin' me up a drink I swear I need it
I think I'm about 'bout to hurt somebody
Swear this man is begging me to leave him
Getting sick of being so mistreated
Another night without, without his arms around me
Who knew that my heart could have a bruise?
You see this scar here on my chest?
I'm hurting and he don't even care
It's four a.m. and my lover won't answer
He's probably somewhere with a dancer
Sippin' champagne while I'm in his bed
It's 4 a.m. and I think I might lose it
This mu'fucker thinking I'm stupid
He must've bumped his head
Don't he know it's four a.m.
I don't deserve this life
I'd make the perfect wife
And I know love's a sacrifice
But who's gonna sacrifice for me and
Give me all their time and
Who knew that my heart could have a bruise?
You see this scar here on my chest?
I'm hurting and he don't even care
It's 4 a.m. and my lover won't answer
He's probably somewhere with a dancer
Sippin' champagne while I'm in his bed
It's 4 a.m. and I think I might lose it
This mu'fucker thinking I'm stupid
He must've bumped his head
Don't he know it's 4 a.m.
Sitting here feeling kinda crazy
But not just any crazy
It's the kind you feel when you love somebody
In Melanie Fiona's song "4 A.M.", she expresses the emotions of a woman who is deeply in love with her partner, but is experiencing the pain of being treated poorly. The beginning of the song sets the mood, where Melanie states that she feels "kinda crazy, but not just any crazy." She is feeling the type of crazy that comes when you love someone, and that love is not being reciprocated. She knows that her partner is seeing someone else, and this knowledge is driving her insane. The lyrics convey her feeling of helplessness, as she cannot control her partner's actions, but is hurting because of them. She states that her heart has been bruised and there is a scar on her chest, implying that the pain is not only emotional but also physical. However, her partner does not seem to care, and this is causing her to feel more hurt.
As the song moves on, Melanie becomes angrier and more frustrated. She is pouring herself a drink, feeling the need to numb the pain. She is ready to hurt someone because of the mistreatment that she is experiencing. She describes her partner as "begging her to leave him." The frustration and pain are culminated in the hook of the song where Melanie states repeatedly that it is 4 A.M., and her lover won't answer. He is out with someone else sipping champagne while she is left alone in bed, broken-hearted. She questions why she deserves such treatment and why someone cannot sacrifice for her for once. She ultimately ends the song where she begins, feeling crazy because of her love but also suffering pain because of it.

"Never make someone a priority, when all you are to them is an option."
- Maya Angelou
One of the wisest things I've ever heard someone say, especially when it comes to dating/relationships.
Love the song, but to those with a broken heart, always remember:
We teach people how to treat us. Set boundaries and stick to them. Otherwise, people will walk all over you. No man/woman can make or break you. Recognize your worth, and tell that mofo to kick rocks. Leave graciously, and with a smile on your face. You deserve better. ❤
