She began her musical career in the early-1990s fronting a band named Tabitha Zu. Punky in a glittery sort of way, they were an indicator of things to come. Although largely tipped for the top and even playing the Reading Festival in 1992, they only released one EP, titled On Reality, before morphing into the simply named Zu. As Zu, again, only one EP, The Apart, was released, before they disbanded.
Melanie Garside re-emerged in 1996 with her hair cut short and dyed orange, and with her first solo album, Fossil. At this stage, she was frequently described as "The indie scene's Shania Twain". Two singles were released from the album; Big White Room, and She Knows.
This stage did not last long, with Mel re-appearing once again, this time fronting a three-piece band, calling themselves Our Lady Of Miracles. Under this guise, Melanie dropped the indie label and returned to making quirky rock music. After playing a few gigs they changed their name to The Vertigo Angels and released their only album Eradicate Apathy in 2003. Two singles; 'Burned' (Hijack)' and 'Firefly', were also released. Although the album was met with critical acclaim, The Vertigo Angels appear to have disbanded. This is also around the time Melanie became Maple Bee (sometimes Maplebee), being credited this way on the Eradicate Apathy album.
It was around this time that Melanie, as Maple Bee, joined the Mediaeval Baebes. She has sung on their latest albums, Mirabilis - as well as arranging and performing lead vocal on All For Love Of One - and the soundtrack to the BBC television series The Virgin Queen.
She has also released one album as Maple Bee to date, Chasing Eva. Chasing Eva was originally released in 2003 as a single album, but was re-released with all new artwork as a double CD in 2004. The album is penned entirely by Melanie except two tracks written in collaboration with other musicians, and a cover of Doris Day's Perhaps, Perhaps. Melanie, a talented guitarist, plays almost all the instruments as well as singing. Mel has also stated on her website that she is currently working on a new MapleBee record.
From 2004 to 2005, she played bass in her sister, KatieJane Garside's band, Queenadreena, and appeared on their latest album, The Butcher and the Butterfly. She toured with them for a short time, before leaving to focus on her other projects.
Maple Bee and writer/producer Pike Galloway are currently working together as a duo under the name of Huski, with an album, entitled Love, Peace, Pain due for release in July 2006, following the three track single Make Me Your Picture (iTunes exclusive), on May 22nd.

She Knows
Melanie Garside Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Take another deeper breath your quickening heart is catching your fall
Make another grab for hands addled mind trip down the hall
She's stumbling over trash 'cause she knows
I fell down to the floor she's down by my feet
Going to take a spiral down her head's alight I'm still on my feet
She crawls down the hallway and I'm glued to the floor
And now that it's come around to this
Might as well stay a while 'cause she knows
Take a little time don't you worry you can stay here with me
Pushing you further in the corner tie your face to this tree
Watching you tug at your emotions tie yourself up in knots
Well, I know how that feels talk to yourself
And now that it's come around to this
Might as well stay a while 'cause she knows
Well, everything's a part of me
Hold it up and yet you will see
Turn it around and isolate
No gaps in the time you waste
Spinning up and round in circles now crash into the wall
Take another deeper breath your quickening heart is catching your fall
Looking up over dig beneath your feet the floor is a mess
Got to climb out of this 'cause now you know that
And now that it's come around to this
Might as well stay a while 'cause she knows, she knows
She knows, she knows
She knows, she knows
You know she knows
You know she knows
In Melanie Garside's song She Knows, the lyrics seem to describe a person who is lost in their own thoughts and emotions, unable to control their actions or reactions. The opening lines suggest a sense of disorientation and confusion, with the person spinning in circles and crashing into walls. However, they are also trying to hold onto something stable, reaching out for a helping hand to guide them down the hall. The line "She's stumbling over trash 'cause she knows" suggests that the person may be aware of their mistakes and the mess they have made, but they are still struggling to regain their balance and find their way.
The chorus of the song, which repeats the line "And now that it's come around to this, might as well stay a while 'cause she knows", seems to imply that the person has accepted their current situation and is resigned to staying where they are, even if it's not a happy or healthy place to be. The second verse introduces another character, perhaps someone who is trying to help the person, but who is also struggling to keep themselves on their feet. The line "I can scream now 'cause I catch your fall" suggests a sense of relief that the person has found someone who will support them, even if only temporarily.
The final verse of the song is perhaps the most cryptic. The lines "Well, everything's a part of me, hold it up and yet you will see, turn it around and isolate, no gaps in the time you waste" suggest a level of introspection and self-awareness, but it's not clear what the person is trying to say or do. The final lines of the song return to the chorus, but with a slight variation, repeating the phrase "you know she knows" several times. This repetition gives the impression that the person is still trapped in their own thoughts, unable to break free from the cycle of self-doubt and insecurity.
