I'm a Woman
Melinda Doolittle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I can wash out 44 pairs of socks and have 'em hangin out on the line
I can starch & iron 2 dozens shirts 'fore you can count from 1 to 9
I can scoop up a great big dipper full of lard from the drippins can
Throw it in the skillet, go out & do my shopping, be back before it melts in the pan
'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

I can rub & scrub this old house til it's shinin like a dime
Feed the baby, grease the car, & powder my face at the same time
Get all dressed up, go out and swing til 4 a.m. and then
Lay down at 5, jump up at 6, and start all over again
'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

If you come to me sickly you know I'm gonna make you well
If you come to me all hexed up you know I'm gonna break the spell
If you come to me hungry you know I'm gonna fill you full of grits
If it's lovin you're likin, I'll kiss you and give you the shiverin' fits
'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again

I can stretch! a green black dollar bill from here to kindom come!
I can play the numbers pay the bills and still end up with some!
I got a twenty-dollar gold piece says there ain't nothing I can't do
I can make a dress out of a feed bag and I can make a man out of you

'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, I'll say it again
'Cause I'm a woman! W-O-M-A-N, and that's all.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Melinda Doolittle's "I'm a Woman" are an ode to the power, strength, and resilience of women. The first verse highlights the domestic responsibilities of a woman and her ability to multitask. She can wash a huge number of socks, iron clothes efficiently, and even cook while running errands. All of these house chores are accompanied by her repeating the refrain, "I'm a woman," to assert her identity. In the second verse, she showcases her ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously. She can take care of her baby, do makeup, and clean the house all at once. The songstress also mentions her dancing skills, indicating her love of having fun and enjoying herself. In the final verse, Melinda Doolittle shows her nurturing side, promising to take care of her man if he comes to her sick or broken-hearted. She's not just any woman, but a powerful one who can turn a man around and make him a better person. " I'm a woman, W-O-M-A-N" is repeated three times in the verse, emphasizing the unapologetic confidence of a woman who knows her worth.

Overall, "I'm a Woman" is a feel-good song that celebrates the strength and beauty of women. It's a reminder that women are capable of accomplishing anything they set their minds to, be it domestic chores or conquering the world.

Well ...

Since this is a manipulations of whose really to win !!!

Since the last winner season 5 Taylor Hicks is already 29 y/o ...

The Fremantle don't want aging winners !!!

So ... to compensate ...
They chose 16 y/o Jordin instead !!!

Three reasons why this performance is nothing short of brilliant: 1. Her onstage persona: from her personal interviews, she comes across as a soft-spoken, sweet, almost innocent girl, and when she's onstage, the spirit of whatever song she's singing completely overtakes her, and this is a perfect example. 2. Having been back-up singer, she gives them their time to shine. I love that. 3. Every note is pitch-perfect and enriched with a gorgeous, full tone. She is amazing!!

I still can't figure out why she didn't win this season. I mean, she was just so perfect!!! Best singer of all the contestants of the American Idol.

victor dunson

One of the worst decisions ever on Idol.

Ambo

erinaito she's even better now

Jack Oli

erinaito I think the real travesty is that Blake Lewis came 2nd over her... ridiculous decision. Jordin was a very worthy winner, for 17 years old her voice is unreal.

Sam H

ASMRfanatic Jordin was also “nice and sweet” all the time lol
