It Won't Be Long Now
Melissa Barrera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The elevated train by my window
Doesn't faze me anymore
The rattling screams don't disrupt my dreams
It's a lullaby, in its way
The elevated train drives everyone insane
But I don't mind, oh no
When I bring back boys
They can't tolerate the noise
And that's okay, 'cause I never let them stay
And one day
I'm hoppin' that elevated train and I'm riding away!
Yeah!
It won't be long now!

The boys around the way holler
At me when I'm walking down the street
Their machismo pride doesn't break my stride
It's a compliment, so they say
The boys around the way holler
At me every day but I don't mind, oh no, no
If I'm in the mood, it will not be with some dude
Who is whistling 'cause he has nothing to say
Or who's honking at me from his Chevrolet!
One day I'm hoppin' in a limousine
And I'm driving away!
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
It won't be long now

Oh snap!
Who's that?
Don't touch me, I'm too hot! Yes!
¿Qué pasó? Here I go!
So dope!
¡Y tú lo sabe'!
No pare
¡Sigue, sigue!
Did you see me?
Freaky freak it!

What a way to begin the weekend
Sonny, anything you want is free, man!
And my dearly beloved Dominican Republic
I haven't forgotten you!
Gonna see this honey, make a little money
And one day I'll hop Jet Blue!
But until that fateful day, I'm grateful
I got a destination

I'm runnin' to make it home
And home's what Vanessa's runnin' away from!
I'm runnin' to make it home
And home's what Vanessa's runnin' away from

The neighborhood salon
Is the place I am working for the moment
As I cut their hair, ladies talk and share
Every day, who's doin' who and why

The neighborhood salon
Doesn't pay me what I wanna be making
But I don't mind
As I sweep the curb
I can hear those turbo engines
Blazing a trail through the sky
I look up and think about the years gone by
One day, I'm walkin' to JFK and I'm gonna fly!

It won't be long now!
Any day

Overall Meaning

The song "It Won't Be Long Now" by Melissa Barrera talks about the struggle of a young woman living in a neighborhood where an elevated train runs by her window. The train's noise has become a lullaby for her, and she doesn't mind it anymore. She talks about how the boys in her neighborhood holler at her every day, but she takes it as a compliment. She dreams of leaving the neighborhood one day, and she is determined to make it happen. She wants to ride the elevated train, get in a limousine, and fly away from it all. She works in a neighborhood salon, where she isn't paid as much as she would like, but she is hopeful that one day she'll be walking to JFK, and it won't be long now.

The song's lyrics highlight the dreams and aspirations of young women who live in neighborhoods that are often neglected and ignored. Despite the challenges she faces, Vanessa, the singer in the song, remains resilient and hopeful. The song also touches on themes of empowerment, agency, and determination. The lyrics celebrate Vanessa's self-confidence and her ability to withstand the harsh living conditions and the gendered stereotypes that she faces every day. Through her journey, the song inspires young women to believe in themselves and their dreams, no matter how difficult the path may seem.

When I first listened to the new version of In The Heights I feared Melissa's Vanessa wasn't as powerfull as the original cast recordings, but she is AMAZING. Her voice feats Vanessa's character perfectly and she portraits her beautifully.
