I Didn't Know What Time It Was
Melody Breyer-Grell Lyrics

Once I was young
Yesterday, perhaps
Danced with Jim and Paul
And kissed some other chaps

Once I was young
But never was naive
I thought I had a trick or two
Up my imaginary sleeve
And now I know I was naive

I didn't know what time it was
Then I met you
Oh, what a lovely time it was
How sublime it was too

I didn't know what day it was
You held my hand
Warm like the month of May it was
And I'll say it was grand

Grand to be alive, to be young
To be mad, to be yours alone
Grand to see your face, feel your touch
Hear your voice say, "I'm all your own"

I didn't know what year it was
Life was no prize
I wanted love and here it was
Shining out of your eyes
I'm wise and I know what time it is now

Grand to be alive, to be young
To be mad, to be yours alone
Grand to see your face, feel your touch
Hear your voice say, "I'm all your own"

I didn't know what year it was
Life was no prize
I wanted love and here it was

Shining out of your eyes
I'm wise and I know what time it is now

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Once I was young, Yesterday, perhaps", sets the stage for Melody Breyer-Grell's "I Didn't Know What Time It Was." The song is about a person who reflects back on her youth and reminisces about her time spent with male companions. She reveals how she thought she was smart and knew how to handle them and herself but now, looking back, she realizes just how naive she was. But, everything changed when she met someone special, someone who she didn't know what time it was.

As the person reflects on her past, we hear how she dances and kissed a few chaps. The use of the word chaps implies that they were not serious or there for a long time. She describes how she thought she knew everything but was naive. In comparison to the beauty of meeting someone who was so wonderful that she didn't know what time it was before that.

The realization of how wise she has become, and more importantly, recognizing that she finally met someone special who made her realize that time didn't matter in their presence, that is the essence of "I Didn't Know What Time It Was". The last line of the song, "I'm wise, and I know what time it is now," shows how much she's grown up and how she perceived the event that allowed her to meet the person who transcended time.
