Baby I
Melody Gardot Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How was I to know that this was always only just a little game to you?
All the time I felt you gave your heart I thought that I would do the same for you,
Tell the truth I think I should have seen it coming from a mile away,
When the words you say are,

Baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love?
If I gave a thought to fascination I would know it wasn't right to care,
Logic doesn't seem to mind that I am fascinated by the love affair,
Still my heart would benefit from a little tenderness from time to time, but never mind,
Cause baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall in love

Baby I should hold on just a moment and be sure it's not for vanity,
Look me in the eye and tell me love is never based upon insanity,
Even when my heart is beating hurry up the moment?s fleeting,
Kiss me now,
Don't ask me home

Cause baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall,

Baby I'm a fool who thinks it's cool to fall,
And I would never tell if you became a fool and fell in love.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Melody Gardot's song "Baby I" tell a story of a person who fell in love with someone who did not reciprocate their feelings. The singer expresses their confusion and hurt over not realizing that the supposed love they received was just a game to the other person. The lyrics also touch on the idea of being a "fool" for falling in love and how it may not always lead to a positive outcome.

Throughout the song, the singer questions their own emotions and thoughts, wondering if what they were feeling was just fascination or vanity. They address their own vulnerability and desire for tenderness, but ultimately come to the realization that they may be seen as a "fool" for wanting those things. The last few lines of the song almost sound like a plea to not be hurt again, with the singer saying they would never tell if the other person became a fool and fell in love.

Overall, the lyrics to "Baby I" are both introspective and vulnerable. They touch on the idea of love as a game, but also the desire for genuine emotions and vulnerability in a romantic relationship.

How she’s not as big as Adele or Winehouse I have no idea. Her voice is simply magical.

I'm so glad I recently discovered Melody Gardot's music

Welcome and settle in. Definitely one of the most elegant voices of this generation and really has feeling when she sings without belting to hit the climax.

Her albums progressively show maturation and growth both lyrically and musically to the point that "Baby, I'm a Fool", as beautiful as it is, becomes less and less of a standout track.
