Born on the 2nd February 1985 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gardot took up piano and played as a youngster on the nightclub scene of Philadelphia, influenced by jazz, folk, rock, and pop musics. At the age of nineteen she was a fashion student at the Community College of Philadelphia. While cycling in Philadelphia in November 2003 she was hit by a car whose driver had ignored a red traffic light. In the accident she suffered serious head and spinal injuries, and her pelvis was broken in two places. Because of these severe injuries she was confined to her hospital bed for a year. Her musical beginning was prompted by a tending physician who was concerned with her cognitive impairment as a result of head injury sustained in the accident. He believed that music would help her brain injury improve, as it has been known to show remarkable results in improving people's cognitive ability after such trauma.
Following her doctor's suggestion, Gardot made recordings bedside, while still unable to walk, and eventually released the works as an EP: Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions (2005). Gardot's desire to be well, combined with a bit of luck, brought her to the attention of a local radio DJ at the AAA station WXPN (known for launching the careers of artists such as Amos Lee and Norah Jones). Her cognitive powers slowly but surely became pronounced, leading to the independent recording and release of her debut CD, Worrisome Heart, which was reissued in 2007 by Verve records.
Gardot is hypersensitive to light and noise, so wears dark glasses; she also uses a cane to walk. Onstage she requires a special seating unit, and wears a Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator, a TENS device, to assist in alleviating her neuralgic muscle pain. Though touring is difficult, she has been performing in major cities on the East Coast of the U.S. to support her recordings. In 2009, working with producer Larry Klein and arranger Vince Mendoza - both known for their work with Joni Mitchell - Gardot followed up her Verve debut with My One and Only Thrill.
In 2012, she released the album The Absence.

But it don't matter
But it don't matter
When does May envelop spring
But it don't matter
But it don't matter, 'cause
When I'm with you
My whole world stands stillYou're my one and only thrill
Ships may never leave the dock
But it don't matter
But it don't matter
Ticks may never hear a tock
But it don't matter
But it don't matter, 'cause
When I'm with you
My whole world stands still
You're my one and only thrill
Shores may never reach the tide
But it don't matter
But it don't matter
Buds may never open wide
But it don't matter
But it don't matter, 'cause
When I'm with you
My whole world stands still
You're my one and only thrill
You're my
You're my
You're my one and only
Thrill
The lyrics of Melody Gardot's song, My One And Only Thrill, express an unconditional love that is not dependent on the ebb and flow of the natural world. The opening lines, "Birds may cease to spread their wings/But it don't matter," suggest that even if the world were to come to an end, the love that the singer feels for the person addressed in the song is so intense, it surpasses the physical world or any natural forces. The lyrics repeat the phrase "But it don't matter" throughout the song, imbuing the lyrics with a sense of resilience and steadfastness that highlights the strength of the connection between the two people.
The chorus, "When I'm with you/My whole world stands still/You're my one and only thrill," encapsulates the passion felt by the singer. The lyrics suggest that their love is a force that suspends time and space, and nothing else matters as long as this connection is intact. The imagery used throughout the song, such as the "Ships may never leave the dock," and "Buds may never open wide," shows how the singer's love is not dependent on external forces, making it all-encompassing.

Once upon a beautiful memory Melody
I gave you a lovely rose by the sea near a stream.
Like a photograph in a dream,
Its flawless beauty was timeless
and frozen like a silent scream.
A token of pure beauty to honor you
on any given special day.
A rose of glass that
will never wilt or go away.
I feel your kind tender heart in this distress
to suppress the foul stench of ugliness,
which others are very careless and thoughtless has given out.
Only a fragile glass rose can honor you as a token
of beauty and friendship which can never be broken.
I am here with my glass rose honoring you in my
dreams of beauty as I have humbly spoken,
after looking into you're wonderful eyes and
seeing you're divine smile without cries.
My rose is made from fragile glass it will never die or be broken
it lives on within your divine majestic beauty and it's not a token.
Your beauty glows towards the heavens as a guiding light a beacon of loveliness for all eternity at first sight without any lessons, carelessness, and thoughtlessness.
You are magnificently filled with bliss.
Suddenly I get this feeling deep within my soul, my mind draws a blank, and my heart sank into my hands slightly shaking as my soul begins racing and quaking. I feel like I'm losing control of sorrow
I'm nervous inside and out about losing another morrow.
I have an unexplainable feeling its as big as Kilimanjaro,
I wish I could figure this out when I see your divine beauty without a doubt, you are so lovely as yarrow and songs of sparrows.
These Monarchs Butterflies waiting on roses in every row trying to borrow every bit of tomorrow like the great pharaohs Nefertiti or Ramesses and humble me hoping to see your majestic beauty.
