Born on the 2nd February 1985 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Gardot took up piano and played as a youngster on the nightclub scene of Philadelphia, influenced by jazz, folk, rock, and pop musics. At the age of nineteen she was a fashion student at the Community College of Philadelphia. While cycling in Philadelphia in November 2003 she was hit by a car whose driver had ignored a red traffic light. In the accident she suffered serious head and spinal injuries, and her pelvis was broken in two places. Because of these severe injuries she was confined to her hospital bed for a year. Her musical beginning was prompted by a tending physician who was concerned with her cognitive impairment as a result of head injury sustained in the accident. He believed that music would help her brain injury improve, as it has been known to show remarkable results in improving people's cognitive ability after such trauma.
Following her doctor's suggestion, Gardot made recordings bedside, while still unable to walk, and eventually released the works as an EP: Some Lessons: The Bedroom Sessions (2005). Gardot's desire to be well, combined with a bit of luck, brought her to the attention of a local radio DJ at the AAA station WXPN (known for launching the careers of artists such as Amos Lee and Norah Jones). Her cognitive powers slowly but surely became pronounced, leading to the independent recording and release of her debut CD, Worrisome Heart, which was reissued in 2007 by Verve records.
Gardot is hypersensitive to light and noise, so wears dark glasses; she also uses a cane to walk. Onstage she requires a special seating unit, and wears a Transcutaneous Electro-Nerve Stimulator, a TENS device, to assist in alleviating her neuralgic muscle pain. Though touring is difficult, she has been performing in major cities on the East Coast of the U.S. to support her recordings. In 2009, working with producer Larry Klein and arranger Vince Mendoza - both known for their work with Joni Mitchell - Gardot followed up her Verve debut with My One and Only Thrill.
In 2012, she released the album The Absence.
Wicked Ride

When her momma says,
Girl, do your best
Cause one day you may come to find
That all of your life has been a wicked ride
There comes a time in every young woman's life
When all of the men though they come and again
And she starts to think life is a wicked ride
There comes a time in every old woman's life
When she takes a look in her picture book
And then she begins to realize
That all of her life has been a wicked ride
All of her life, all of her life, all of her life has been a wicked ride
The song Wicked Ride by Melody Gardot is a song about the journey of life, and how it is never an easy ride. The first verse talks about when a little girl is told by her mother to always do her best, because life can become a wicked ride. This means that although it may seem like everything's going great, things can quickly turn around, and you may face difficulties and hardships. The second verse talks about how as a young woman, men may come and go, but the experiences are hardly enough to survive. This shows that life can be harsh, and sometimes it takes more than just a few good experiences to get through it all.
The final verse talks about an old woman reflecting on her life, and realizing that it has been a wicked ride. This can mean that through all the struggles and hardships, she has still managed to make the best of what life has thrown her way. This song is a reminder to always do your best, even when things are tough, because life is never an easy ride.

There comes a time in every little girl's life
At a certain point in life, every young girl will experience a moment like this
When her momma says,
In such a moment, her mother advises her,
Girl, do your best
to do her best in whatever she does in life
Cause one day you may come to find
This is because a day may come when she will discover that
That all of your life has been a wicked ride
her entire life has been challenging and filled with struggles
There comes a time in every young woman's life
As she advances in age, young women all face a similar moment that reminds them of the hard realities of life
When all of the men though they come and again
No matter how many men come into her life
Its hardly enough to survive
It is still not sufficient to make life feel comfortable or safe
And she starts to think life is a wicked ride
As a consequence, she begins to realize that life is fundamentally unfair
There comes a time in every old woman's life
When old women grow even older, they re-examine their lives
When she takes a look in her picture book
and review their memories with the aid of their photo albums
And then she begins to realize
as they do this, they finally comprehend
That all of her life has been a wicked ride
that their entire life had been difficult and full of challenges
All of her life, all of her life, all of her life has been a wicked ride
This has been the case for the entirety of their existence, leaving them with a sense of hardship and struggle.

Oh thank you so much for posting this ep, I haven't heard it in about ten years! I saw melody for the first time at a little church in Greenwood, DE, and I've loved her since. She got quite a bit more famous since, but I love the stripped down sound of this epic

The version of Wicked Ride that appears in the 2006 release of the Worrisome Heart album is far more beautiful. That album is absolutely exquisite.
