Girl Talk
Melora Hardin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We like to chat about the dresses we will wear tonight
We chew the fat about our tresses and the neighbor's fight
Inconsequential things that men don't really care to know
Become essential things that women find so appropo

But that's a dame
We're all the same
It's just a game
We call it girl talk, girl talk

We all meow about the ups and downs of all our friends
The who, the how, the why, we dish the dirt it never ends
The weaker sex, the speaker sex, you mortal males behold
But though we joke we wouldn't trade you for a ton of gold

It's all been planned
So take my hand
Please understand
The sweetest girl talk, talks of you
Yeah, tell me what

We like to chat about the dresses we will wear tonight
We chew the fat about our tresses and the neighbor's fight
Inconsequential things that men don't really care to know
Become essential things that women find so appropo

But that's a dame
We're all the same
It's just a game
We call it girl talk, girl talk

We all meow about the ups and downs of all our friends
The who, the how, the why, we dish the dirt it never ends
The weaker sex, the speaker sex, you mortal males behold
But though we joke we wouldn't trade you for a ton of gold

So I'll just stay
And gab away
But hear me say

That after girl talk
I'll talk to you, you

Overall Meaning

In Melora Hardin's song "Girl Talk," she illustrates the dialogue that women engage in during a gathering with their fellow femmes. The lyrics divulge that women chat about inconsequential things, such as dresses and hairstyles, as well as the drama that unfolds around them, such as neighborhood quarrels and their friends' ups and downs. She assumes that men don't find this chit-chat necessary, but states that it's an essential thing that women find apropos. The song's title is derived from the phrasing that women realize that this is the conversation that allows them to connect and relate to each other, and is often referred to as "girl talk."

Hardin compares women to cats (meowing) when they chat about the aforementioned topics, and go on to state that the weaker sex (women) is also the singer sex. Hardin also suggests that while they might joke about men not understanding, women would not trade their male companions for anything. The line "But hear me say that after girl talk, I'll talk to you" reveals that in reality, men do hold some significance in their conversations, and they value their opinions too. It appears that female companionship and support take precedence in these female-dominated conversations.
