Morning Cayla Elise, The Ice Melting Blocks experiment shows the different rates at which materials can conduct heat. The aluminum block, which is cooler, is a better conductor of heat than high-density foam block. Surprisingly, the "cooler" block melts the ice faster! Even though the aluminum block feels cold, it conducts heat and will melt the ice cube very fast, where as the foam block does not conduct heat and it will not melt the ice cube. So what happens to the ice cube after a few minutes is it melts on the aluminum block and does not melt on the foam block. thanks Ken

Good Morning Irfan, I have not done a experiment on which metal gets colder fastest or stays cold longer, but I might give it a try as it sounds like a fun experiment. Most metals are pretty good conductors of heat with Copper and Aluminum being the best. While steel and bronze have the lowest conductor of heat. Heat conductivity is a very important property when deciding which metal to use for a specific application. As copper is an excellent conductor of heat, it’s good for heat exchangers, heat sinks, and even saucepan bottoms. Because steel is a poor conductor of heat, it’s good for high-temperature environments like airplane engines. Thanks Ken

Good Morning Paola L, Great question. Most times the aluminum block on the left will melt the ice cube in less then 2 minutes. This experiment it melted in 1:56. Once you feel the aluminum block and how cold it is, you would never think it was going to melt the ice cube so fast. Thanks Ken

Morning TheDrawer, Yes please do. My son used it for his class, as they had a challenge to melt ice the fastest. Of course he did it the fastest, but second fastest time was 15 minutes. Its a great experiment. thanks Ken

Good Morning Astre Knot, Great question and I have not done this experiment before, so I will guess but you let me know if I'm right or wrong. When you take ice cubes out of the freezer, the melting process begins right away because the air temperature around the ice cubes is warmer than the temperature in the freezer. When you heat ice with high temperature using a stove, its temperature rises, but as soon as the ice starts to melt, the temperature stays constant until all the ice has melted. This happens because all the heat energy goes into breaking the bonds of the ice's crystal lattice structure. Even though the heat temperature stays constant in the stove. I would guess the stove still melts faster then the room temperature ice cube.
Here is a experiment I did but have not posted.
How long does it take for an ice cube to melt?
A 1 inch ice cube at 75°F room temperature (24°C) will take 45 to 60 minutes to melt.
A 1 inch ice cube, submerged in a cup of cold water would take about 15-20 minutes to melt.
A 1 inch ice cube, submerged in a cup of room temperature water, it would melt in 5-10 minutes.
A 1 inch ice cube in a typical cup of 8 ounces (240ml) filled with boiling water and it took 45 seconds for a 1 inch ice cube to melt.

Hi Alt babies, The block on the left is a aluminum block, which is a better conductor of heat than high-density foam block on the right. Surprisingly, when you feel the aluminum block on the left it feels "cooler" and melts the ice faster! Good Morning Scout, My son had the same challenge from his teacher and he asked me and I gave him my experiment and his ice cube melted the fastest in 2 minutes and the next student was I think 12 minutes. Good Morning Andrei, A ice cube without salt melts because the air around it is warmer than 32 degrees F (0 degrees Celsius). A salted cube melts faster. When you add salt it dissolves into the water of the ice cube. Salt water freezes at a lower temperature than the 32 degrees F (0 degrees Celsius) at which freshwater freezes. The difference between the air temperature and the freezing point of salt water is bigger than the difference between the air temperature and the freezing point of freshwater. This makes the ice with salt on it melt faster. thanks Ken

Hi Chaman Jha, Ice shrinks (melts) when heat energy causes the molecules to move faster, breaking the hydrogen bonds between molecules to form liquid water. In the melting process, the water molecules actually absorb energy. This is why an ice cube melts more quickly on the outside and retains its coldness and solidity longer at the center: melting is a cooling process. thanks Ken

Hi Chelsea, The black blocks are made of two different materials, Aluminum and foam. Energy is absorbed by the ice as it melts. The air is a poor conductor of heat because the air particles can only transfer heat when the collide with the ice. The Aluminum block is an excellent conductor of heat due to the electrons being relative free to transfer energy (sea of electrons). The other block (a foam plastic) is a poor conductor due to electrons not free to move about and there are many air holes, which are poor conductors as well. I hope this explains how it works. Good Morning Wesley, Great question, though I have not done a experiment on my channel on this, I have experimented with melting ice. I think I will do this experiment and give you credit for suggesting it to me. So what I do is mix 1/3 part water and 2/3 part isopropyl or rubbing alcohol. Pour the solution into a spray bottle and in the morning, spray it on your windshield. The ice will disappear instantly. Why does this simple combo work? Turns out, rubbing alcohol has a much lower freezing point than water (128°F below 0), so it speeds up the melting process and prevent the surface from icing up in the future. Also you can try adding a couple drops of dish soap, as the soap should bubble and help melt the ice. Let me know which one works? If you have a faster way also let me know, as I want to give it a try. Thanks and have a great day. Ken

Heat can be transferred by conduction, convection, or radiation. The Ice Melting Blocks experiment shows the different rates at which materials can conduct heat. Simply place (1) O-ring on each block along with an ice cube and observe the rates at which the ice cubes melt. Discover aluminum block is a better conductor of heat than high-density foam block. Surprisingly, the "cooler" block melts the ice faster! Even though the aluminum block feels cold, it conducts heat very good and will melt the ice cube very fast, where as the foam block does not conduct heat and it will not melt the ice cube.
