Early years
Memphis "One Hit Away" Bleek's first mainstream rap vocals appeared on the Clark Kent produced song "Coming of Age", featured on Jay-Z's classic debut LP Reasonable Doubt. Shortly after, Bleek became the first artist signed to Roc-A-Fella Records.
"Coming of Age", ironiclly, was also the title of Memphis' debut LP, which didn't create massive records sales and chart-topping singles as his labelmate and peers' albums had. The same was the case of his second LP, "The Understanding", and third, "M.A.D.E", though the latter spawned his largest amount of sales yet (900,000).
Get Low label and rivalries
In the time between the releases of his second and third albums, Memphis Bleek started his own label, Get Low, which in turn led to the signing of former Junior MAFIA member Lil' Cease. The name of the label has sparked a hip-hop rivalry, or beef, between Memphis Bleek, JT tha Bigga Figga & The Game, the former of which built an independent record label with the same title.
Memphis Bleek was also caught in the middle of the epic Jay-Z and Nas battle, in which Bleek gained a few enemies, most notably Nas and Mobb Deep. Despite boosting Jay-Z and Nas's careers, the beef did little to help Bleek gain any more popularity than he had already attained.
Later years
Remaining one hit away, on May 17, 2005, Bleek released his fourth album titled "534" , in reference to the building he & mentor Jay-Z grew up in, located in the Marcy housing projects of Brooklyn. However, like many of Bleeks previous releases the album suffered in sales, despite decent exposure of the Swizz Beatz produced single 'Like That'.
In fall 2005, Memphis Bleek told MTV that he was recording an album called "The Process", that he would describe as a make or break album, saying "I want to do an album that's through the roof, I want to do a classic album. I feel that if this album I'm not recording is a classic, I'm not even gonna put it out. I have to do it bigger than anybody has ever done it. I have to make a good record this time, not just talking-junk records."The rapper has worked on the album since 2005 and during that time frame he would release the songs "Hustla", "Get Ya Money Off" and "Let It Off". During this time, he would also leave Roc-A-Fella after Jay-Z told him he could run his own company and had the proper distribution deals to do so. He found a new home in 2009 when he signed to Mass Appeal Entertainment which is where he will release his long anticipated album The Process is yet.

I Get High
Memphis Bleek Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
"Yo Bleek what you be doing on your spare time and shit?"
This what I do man (nigga)
Check how I do (yo)
Yo
[Chorus]
I gets high (high)
Ma' don't ask why
I love gettin' high
While I drive
I can't lie (I can't lie)
I puff lye (I puff lye)
While I drive down the I95
[Repeat]
[Verse 1]
I put this key in the ignition
Start my V
Take the clip out the ashtray
Spark my trees
You know that haze weed
Backwood roll tight
Belvedere cranberry juice mix light
Under 30% tint ridin' bent
Doin' a quarter
Smokin' on what grow under water
My life in order
You know I got a pocket fulla sticky
The whole BK, light a blunt up for Biggie
And smokeout
I gives a fuck if you got a skateboard
Or that new XO out
You blow the row out
And holla
I'mma survive or die
I'mma ride 'cause they never take a nigga alive
I gets high
Rollin' down the I95
Starrin' through the rearview
From all the shit I survived
And as I ride by
I just tilt my hat
Put the car on cruise and roll up another sack
[Chorus]
[Repeat]
[Verse 2]
You catch Bleek rollin' hay
When I'm down in the Bay
Hey it don't stop
I light a blunt up for 'Pac
Pop my colla
Take another sip of that vodka
Hit three wheel motion
Locin' in the Impala
On them fifty spoke
With two pounds to smoke
And the weed come clean
No sticks no seed
Straight bud
And keep the car weed scented
Mami be like Bleek
We can't, breathe in it
Mami keep cool
Let me remove the roof
Take a sip of that Bel've
And remove your shoes
But ch'ya
Recline baby
Smoke good lime baby
This the real green
Out the High Times baby
We sittin' on dubs
Know what that like?
Twist enough bud
Mami get your mind right
[Chorus]
[Repeat]
I gets high
Holla at the I95
Holla at the bar
Yeah, uh huh
I can't lie (lie)
Holla at the bar
I puff lye (lye)
When I drive down the I95 (5)
G'yeah niggas
y'all know
Holla at me (understand this now, we out, One)
Smoke one with cha dawg
The song "I Get High" by Memphis Bleek is an ode to enjoying one's spare time by getting high while driving down the I-95 highway. Bleek admits that he loves getting high while he drives and can't lie about it. He mentions smoking weed, particularly haze weed, while driving and rolls his backwood tight while sipping on Belvedere cranberry juice mix. Bleek also reminisces about smoking a blunt for Biggie and his own journey in life surviving various tribulations. In the second verse, Bleek talks about smoking to Tupac, doing wheel motions while driving the Impala, and smoking straight buds without any sticks or seeds with people he's riding with. The song closes with Bleek inviting his listeners to join him in smoking and sharing a moment together.
The lyrics in "I Get High" portray Bleek as an unrepentant stoner who enjoys getting high even while driving. Bleek seems to feel that getting high helps him relax and cope better, whether he is driving on the highway or chilling with friends. The song is a celebration of his lifestyle and an invitation to others to join him.
Overall, "I Get High" is a straightforward lyrical narrative about a man who isn't afraid to enjoy his spare time smoking weed and driving down the I-95, regardless of the risks. The song might be considered controversial due to its references to drug use while driving, but it clearly resonates with many people. Bleek's vivid descriptions of his experience, particularly the use of specific brand names, add to the song's authenticity and make it more relatable to people who also enjoy smoking weed.
