This movie sucks actually because lack of some logic. But it's indeed soo thrilly.

One big irrational logic here is..
The earth itself with human activities already so noisy. Either by human activities and their machines or by the nature sounds. So how the aliens know those human movement noises?!?

Like.. a big coal plant or some machines is noisy enough to call them from far away places maybe. Why no one make somekind of soundtrap thing? Make some area for noisy thing. Use machines, ocean waves, ringtones, automata, etc. To gather them in that area. And then you can move freely outside that area because aliens gather up at those regions.

Big whale itself is so noisy. Some monkey in forest too. Flies, bees, etc. Friction between leaves, landslide, avalanche, etc.

1. Evelyn is able to stop herself screaming despite knowing her son is going to die. She does this again later in the movie while giving birth. Incredible personal strength.

2. Lee runs towards his son putting himself in danger because he would die to protect them. He does this again later to save the other kids by shouting to get the monsters attention.

I love how they handled this with the deaf girl. She can't hear the sound like the others can, but she sees the fear and despair in her parents faces, then turns around to see the kid with the toy she gave him, allowing her to put the pieces together. I can't imagine the guilt she must've felt.

well its kinda her fault anyway for leaving the smallest vulnerable child in the back where he can easily be distracted and not watched over. he is a child. the reason why he fell so far behind was because he stopped in order to take the toy out of his bag. if he was in the middle, they couldve prevented him from doing so by either keeping him on pace or yeeting the toy once he turned it on. not to mention setting him up to fail by giving him batteries for a toy that emits loud noises in the first place.

@Chuggaacola If I'm not mistaken, when the kid first finds the toy he is told it's too loud and thus dangerous. The dad then removes the batteries and places them on a nearby shelf so there would be less chance of an accident. The sister then grabbed the toy (without the batteries) and gave it to her brother who then proceeded to grab the batteries and put them back in the toy without his parents or siblings knowing which then resulted in this scene.

I agree with everyone else here that having such a young child walk behind everyone is stupid in this situation (all children should have been between mom and dad), but overall the dad did take precautions when he saw the toy to prevent an issue from occuring because of it.

I read once that the Alpha Male in a Wolf pack always is at the end or last during excursions to make sure the pack stays uniformed and in-line throughout the trek/journey. Their line of sight from the end is crucial to eye and spot potential dangers from left to right and especially from behind. The next one in rank after him is at front because he knows just enough to lead, when to veer the pack, stop for danger etc.. but the Alpha is responsible for the ENTIRE clan.

This is a genius way to set up how much of a threat the monsters are and hence how absolutely crucial the silence is. The moment the toy lit up, Emily's character instantly accepts that the kid is as good as dead. There are no monsters in sight, but the moment sound was made, its already there.

@Green Bean Gang Fear of the unknown is extremely effective, but it's not the only way to go with horror. With a film like this, you needed the set-up from the start to create the tension: every and any sound can get you instantly killed by a scary monster. Without showing the consequences, you wouldn't be so nervous throughout stuff like the birth scene.

Main reason this specific part of the movie is so good, is because most movies don't make kid's deaths happpen so much (or at least its not shown), because its by far the worst case scenario for anyone to live through.

But to be fair, who in their right mind will have a family walk, AND PUT THE YOUNGEST KID IN THE BACK OF THE LINE LIKE 15 METERS AWAY !?

There is some strategy to it. The children are most likely to cause noise and pull attention, keeping them at the tail and wings of the group ensures anything attacking them doesn't end up in the center of the formation and catch others in collateral. Doubtful that the parents planned this, given how evidently uncaring it can be.

What's really heart breaking in this scene is Emily Blunt's stellar reaction in the situation.

Her face goes from abject terror, straight to mourning because she knows her husband isn't going to make it to their son in time, and that, though he only died at the end of the clip, he was dead the moment that shuttle went off.

You kind of see the same look on his father's face as he's running to him; a determined demeanor that becomes resigned, with every step, that the effort he's making to save his son is more than likely futile.

Hands down my favourite scene from this movie because of one major factor: a child character dies. You don't see that often in horror films and, as cruel as it sounds, it is plain logic. When you're in a situation where danger can happen every second, the monsters won't attack and do a selection based on the age or everything else about their victims. They hear a sound, you're dead, whoever you are, and that's it. Cruel rule, but fully explained in less than one minute:
Absolutely no one is protected.

Another horror film that did this was 30 Days Of Night and that film is about an alaskan town that gets attacked by a gang of vampires throughout a 30 Day period of no sunlight, there was a scene where a vampire was feeding on a little kid in graphic detail, I like it when filmmakers have the balls to kill off children, mainly because it's realistic, the monster or killer isn't gonna spare you 'cause you're little.

The creature design in these movies are fantastic. It’s form, they’re faster and virtually invulnerable to whatever weapons people have. If you make any noise to alert them, you are dead. I love that. It makes the movie a lot more suspenseful and scary to watch

If you leave a young kid alone within easy reach of something they're not supposed to have there's a 95% chance they'll take it.

@DBT well if you look closely.. there isn’t much day to day human activity. In this timeline of the movie it shows the aftermath of these creatures locating everyone through noise and mass murdering humans. This is what’s left and in that time I doubt they had coal plants still operating.

Any device that is set to constantly broadcast sound would either eventually run out of power or would be broken since the monsters are incredibly strong with really, really sharp claws. They can cut through metal easily so they'd likely be able to break a sound trap.

And they do use traps in the movie anyway. There's the fireworks, alarm clocks, throwing objects, etc. Luring them away doesn't make you safe.

The introduction to this franchise was the ultimate header. It gave you an in-depth reality of the nature of these beings even after only being shown in a 1 second fly by swatting their son with a vile aggression. We learned here in this brief scene all about exactly how delicate and advanced the death angels’ hearing was as well as how much of an apex predator it was. Super cool. You can’t have watched this scene and not wanted there to NOT be a 2nd a 3rd and maybe a 4th installment of this movie

Couldn't help but laugh during this scene. Nothing more frustrating in movies when a kid does something stupid and gets others (usually their family) in trouble. At least in this case only he died as a result of his actions. I guess the only real problem is that it's hard to learn that your actions have consequences if you are dead.

Beau's death scene is a devastating moment for the viewer but speaks to their lack of parenting. The child, being four-years-old, does not fully understand what is going on around him. They should have had him traveling in the middle of the group where they could have kept a proper eye on him. On top of that, being the smallest, he has the shortest stride which means that them allowing him to travel in the back of the group would leave him stranded before too long. He was always going to be a sacrifice and a grim message to the others.

The directors turned out their pockets and no f***s were given that day.

@Jose Cuestas nah, rest assured, natural selection took this kid out. He was right there, eyes, ears and brain working when the aliens arrived and attacked the city. Even at such a young age, he should have known not to make noise (and most kids believe it or not would be too scared to even make a peep during a situation like this one, they'd cry, then watch their parents, and learn to be quiet to survive). His sister was trying to keep him safe by leaving the toy without batteries, meanwhile he decided, knowing what was going on, to install them, make noise, and his dumb parents didn't even pay attention from the start. His sister is arguably more vulnerable than he is, but adjusted to the new threat better than him, he might even be slow, because he didn't even seem to care the aliens were attacking during the car scene. Sucks, but it's the truth.

First I wanna say that I love this movie and I wouldn't wanna sit here tearing it down, but out of all the things wrong with this scene, the one that sticks out to me is the fact that they had the young child straggling in the back of the line 😂 Every parent I've ever known has always had their child walking in front of them or held hands with them while walking.. and this is in the real world where there aren't murderous aliens running around snatching kids.

Saddest part is that the girl could've run faster to help him if she could've heard the rocket...but she couldn't and could only tell what was going on by her parents' reactions. Guilt must have been eating her hard since she also was the one who gave him the rocket.

I know it’s a horror film, and I know this is supposed to be a sad scene. However, I burst out laughing when Beau just held that rocket up in the air in his hands. He might as well just be going, “Come and get me motherfuckers” to the death angels.
That being said, his downfall is partly on his parents for not thinking to have him walk in the front, so that they could supervise him more closely. That was really dumb. Thankfully, they do realize this afterwards, and discuss it.

I love how later on in the film, the parents are so worried that the sister felt responsible for her brother’s death, because she gave him batteries back for the space shuttle toy. All I could think of was, “well, yeah, you feel responsible because you are responsible.” I mean, in the situation, giving that little kid the toy and the batteries was like handing him a hand grenade with the pin half way out. It’s not much of a stretch to think that he may blow himself up with it.
