Candy
Mercer Johnny Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Some say it's honey and the bee,
Well sit right down and let me tell you
What my love is to me.
"Candy"
I call my sugar "Candy"
Because I'm sweet on "Candy"
He/She understands me,
My understanding "Candy"
And "Candy"'s always handy
When I need sympathy
I wish that there were four of him/her
So I could love much more of him/her
He/She has taken my complete heart,
Got a sweet tooth for my sweetheart
"Candy"
Its gonna be just dandy
The day I take my "Candy"
And make him mine all mine
Mine
Mercer Johnny's song "Candy" is a sweet love song, where the singer compares the feeling of being in love to candy. The song begins by acknowledging the various metaphors people use to describe love, like a rose or honey and the bee, but the singer calls his/her lover "Candy" because that's how sweet he/she is on him. The repetition of the word "sweet" throughout the song emphasizes the love that the singer feels for Candy.
As the song progresses, the singer lists the reasons why Candy is the perfect partner for him/her. Candy understands the singer, is always there when he/she needs sympathy, and has captured his/her "complete heart." The singer even wishes there were more than one Candy, so he/she could love even more of him/her. The refrain of the song, "Candy is sweet on me," reinforces the idea of mutual love and devotion.
Overall, the song is a simple and joyful celebration of love. The comparison of love to candy is a clever and catchy way to convey the sentiment, and the lyrics express the singer's deep affection for Candy. The upbeat melody and cheerful tone of the song make it a fun and happy addition to any love playlist.

I am brought here by Carl Amari and Hollywood360. Carl airs classic radio episodes, and last night he aired a Christmas episode of "Candy Matson" from 1949. This is the theme song that the organist plays on the unmistakable Hammond. I love this song, as well as everything else that Johnny Mercer wrote or performed.
