Finally Home
MercyMe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And tell him that I've missed him
And tell him all about the man that I became
And hope that it pleased him
There's so much I want to say
There's so much I want you to know
When I finally make it home
When I finally make it home
Then I'll gaze upon the throne of the King
Frozen in my steps
And all the questions that I swore I would ask
Words just won't come yet
So amazed at what I've seen
So much more than this old mind can hold
When I finally make it home
When I finally make it home
And the sweetest sound these ears have yet to hear
The voices of the angels
When I finally make it home
When I finally make it home
The first verse of MercyMe's "Finally Home" suggests a longing to reunite with a loved one who has passed away. The singer expresses the desire to embrace his father once again and catch him up on the life he has lived. In doing so, he hopes to bring his father joy and satisfaction with the man he has become. The sentiment is both universal and personal: it can reflect any lost loved one, but also resonates with the band's story, as lead singer Bart Millard lost his father at the age of 19.
The second verse shifts focus to the singer's anticipation of heavenly eternity. He approaches the throne of God with awe and so much curiosity that he feels he could ask any question...but he can't. He's left speechless in the presence of the King. The singer is overwhelmed with the sights, sounds, and experiences of heaven, realizing that he has only scratched the surface of what it has to offer.
The chorus repeats the phrase "When I finally make it home," highlighting the song's overarching theme of finally being reunited in heaven with loved ones and with God.

MercyMe, you have been ministering to me for well over 20 years, and you're doing it again right now as I listen to this song. My mom just passed away last night, and I am devastated....but I also have 1000% certainty that she's in the arms of Jesus right now. Thank you.
