God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
MercyMe Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Remember Christ our Savior was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from Satan's power when we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy
From God our Heavenly Father a blessed angel came
How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name
Joy to the world
For Christ our Lord has finally come
Let every heart receive its new born King
In MercyMe's song God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, the first verse serves as a reminder of the true reason behind Christmas: the birth of Jesus Christ. The lyrics encourage the merry gentlemen to take comfort and find joy in the fact that Christ was born on Christmas Day to save them from the power of Satan. The song acknowledges that mankind is inherently flawed and prone to going astray, but the birth of Jesus offers redemption and salvation to all who believe.
The second verse recounts the biblical story of the angels that appeared to shepherds in Bethlehem, announcing the birth of Jesus. The lyrics reflect a sense of awe and wonder at the miraculous event, as the most important figure in Christian history is born in a humble manger.
Finally, the refrain of the song rejoices in the coming of Christ and the hope and peace that he brings. The phrase "joy to the world" is a nod to another popular Christmas hymn of the same name, and encourages listeners to embrace the love and grace that Jesus represents.
Overall, the song emphasizes the importance of having faith and celebrating the true meaning of Christmas, rather than getting caught up in materialistic or worldly pursuits.

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

Who to Thy tribes, on Sinai's height
In ancient times didst give the law
