When You Spoke My Name
MercyMe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I first spoke Your name
I used it like a blade
Cutting sharp a mask to hide the pain
When I first spoke Your name

When I next spoke Your name
I could no longer bear the weight
Of years hiding behind the ache
When I next spoke Your name

But when You spoke my name
Oh I swear the angels sang
Peace came and stole my shame
When You spoke my name

Now when I speak Your name
I sing it like a sweet refrain
I have found a peace I can't explain
When I speak Your name

'Cause when You spoke my name
Oh I swear the angels sang
Peace came and stole my shame
When You spoke my name

I can hardly speak
Knowing You know me
Thank God I'm free
Now my world has completely come undone

For I can hear the Son
Calling out to me
'Cause when You spoke my name
Oh I swear the angels sang

Peace came and stole my shame
When You spoke my name
Oh I swear the angels sang

Peace came and stole my shame
When You spoke my name

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to MercyMe's song "When You Spoke My Name" reflect a journey of healing and redemption. The first two verses describe how the singer initially used God's name as a weapon to mask his pain and hide behind his own facade. However, when God spoke his name, the singer experienced a transformative and liberating moment. The angels singing signifies the spiritual joy and transcendence that he felt. Instead of using God's name as an excuse, he now sings it as a sweet refrain, symbolizing the true faith and hope he found in God.

The final verse showcases the overwhelming gratitude and reverence that the singer now has for God. He is humbled by the fact that God knows him completely, and he has found freedom from his past through God's love. The Son's calling refers to the religious metaphor of Jesus reaching out to save the singer from his internal struggles.

Overall, the lyrics in "When You Spoke My Name" reveal a powerful message of the redemptive and transformative nature of faith. By acknowledging and accepting God's love, the singer overcame his inner pain and found solace and meaning in his life.

It's sad that this beautiful song only has 38,000 views! I saw them perform it in concert in 2005 and it really moved me, because on the screens behind them it showed people names just floating by on a background, and you knew that each name was a person that had a story and had been saved by Jesus. It was lovely.
