You Don't Care At All
MercyMe Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So many wasted days
Thinking all I've done is all that I am
So many lonely nights on my own
But it's a funny thing
You see my heart so differently
No matter what I feel or where I go
I still don't quite understand
How all of my yesterdays
All of my past mistakes
You've thrown them all away
You don't care at all
You don't care at all
No matter what I do
What I am going through
It's already died with you
You don't care at all
You don't care at all

Old me is out the door
He won't be living here anymore
You simply spoke my name and set me free
I still just can't believe
When I was lost and running away
That you would see a heart worth redeeming
And I'll never quite understand

All of my yesterdays
All of my past mistakes
You've thrown them all away
You don't care at all
You don't care at all
No matter what I do
What I am going through
It's already died with you
You don't care at all
You don't care at all

How is it that I am yours and you're mine
Why would you know me
When I'm so unworthy of mercy and you're divine
You still made me holy

(You don't care)
All of my yesterdays
All of my past mistakes
You've thrown them all away
You don't care at all
You don't care at all
No matter what I do
What I am going through
It's already died with you
You don't care at all
You don't care at all

All of my yesterdays
All of my past mistakes
You've thrown them all away
You don't care at all
You don't care at all
No matter what I do
What I am going through
It's already died with you

You don't care at all
You don't care at all

Overall Meaning

In this song, the singer is reflecting on his past mistakes and how they have caused him to feel lost and alone. He is confused by the fact that despite all his flaws and failures, God still sees him as worthy of redemption. The chorus implies that God has forgiven him and is not holding his past against him. Even though the singer does not understand why he is being given this second chance, he is grateful and amazed that God would care so much for him.

The bridge of the song highlights the contrast between the singer's unworthiness and God's perfection. Despite this, God has chosen to make the singer holy and to care for him regardless of his past.

The message of the song is a reminder that we are all flawed and make mistakes, but God's love and forgiveness are always available to us. This message resonates with listeners who have struggled with feelings of shame and unworthiness due to their past mistakes.

This song is very troublesome to me, and I must say it distinctly misrepresents God and His Divine Will.

God does care for us, He cares intimately and so much more than we can imagine. God cares about our yesterdays, our today, and our tomorrows.

God NEVER "throws away the past"!!! God rewards our good deeds with a treasury of merit: see the Biblical concept of "storing up treasure in Heaven" (Mt 6:19-21). Our evil deeds have wounded Christ in His Passion and Death, and our evil deeds must be wiped clean by their sincere confession, our absolution through the ministry of the Church, and our acts of penance (or "satisfaction").

As I read through these lyrics looking for an orthodox interpretation, I feel I have failed, and I feel that MercyMe has failed the Christian community worldwide in preaching this false message. I hope they repent and come to believe in the Truth of the Gospel, because God's Divine Will is more beautiful than any of the nihilistic accusations herein.

Friend, your post sounds a lot like salvation by works. Our salvation is by faith ALONE but we ARE working now for our rewards INDEPENDENTLY of our salvation assured and guaranteed by God when we confess Christ as Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead. MercyMe is alluding to this fact. Works never could never do and never will save us. That's their point

Idk I think it's alluding to the fact that no matter our sins, Jesus has already died to save us, and that one should always have hope God is looking out for us. Don't think it means God literally doesn't care for our past. Christian music has enough of a hard time being this good man and is heavily divided. This kind of attitude doesn't help the Christian community.
