I Got You Babe
Merril Bainbridge Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They say we're young and we don't know
Won't find out until we grow
Well I don't know, maybe that's true
'Cause you got me and baby I've got you

Baby, I got you babe, I got you babe
They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned our money's always spent
I guess that's so, we don't have a lot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got
Baby, I got you babe, I got you babe
I got flowers in the spring
I got you, you wear my ring
And when I'm sad, you're a clown
And when I get scared you're always around
So let them say your hair's too long
I don't care, with you I can't do wrong
Then put your little hand in mine
There ain't no hill or mountain we can't climb
Baby, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe
I got you to hold my hand
I got you to understand
I got you to walk with me
I got you to talk with me
I got you to kiss goodnight
I got you to hold me tight
I got you I won't let go
I got you to love me so

I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe
I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe, I got you babe

Overall Meaning

Merril Bainbridge's "I Got You Babe" is a beautiful love song that speaks of the power of love. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that they may be young and naive, but they do not really care because they have someone they love and vice versa. The line "They say we're young and we don't know, Won't find out until we grow" seems to be a nod to the conventional wisdom that relationships require maturity, and that young people cannot truly understand or appreciate love. However, the singer rebuts this, saying that they have found love already and maybe that counts for something. Love is not predicated on age or experience.

The song acknowledges that they may be struggling financially, but that does not take anything away from the love they share. They do not have a lot, but they feel fulfilled and secure because they have each other. The love they share compensates for all other needs in life. Throughout the song, the singer continues to list all the things they have because of their partner, such as flowers in the spring, someone to understand and walk with, someone to hold at night. The song ends with the singer saying that they will never let each other go because they have each other to love.

In summary, "I Got You Babe" is a fantastic representation of what love can be. Love is not about having an abundance of wealth, career success, or other accomplishments, but about having someone special to share life with. The song acknowledges that love has the power to conquer all things, and that true love is not impeded by life's difficulties.

Love Merril’s voice, childhood favourite 🦋

@HalfBakedLunatic

I was quite pleasantly surprised to run across this gem. What fun! Merril Bainbridge and Shaggy, doing a cover of Sonny and Cher - who woulda thunk? Upon further research, it appears this was recorded for the soundtrack of an Australian movie titled "Welcome to Woop Woop" - but the movie was never released outside of Australia, and they didn't have rights to distribute the song on it's own. The movie had the same director that did "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"
