People
Merrill Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here we are, out of cigarettes,
Holding hands and yawning; look how late it gets,
Two sleepy people, by dawn's early light,
Too much in love to say good-night.

Say, here we are, in this cozy chair,
Picking on a wishbone from the Frigidaire,
Two sleepy people, with nothing to say,
Much to much in love to break away.

Do you the remember the nights we used to linger in the hall?
Papa didn't like you at all,
But I was crazy 'bout you, baby!
Do you remember the reason why we married in the Fall?
To rent this little nest, and get a bit of rest!

Well, here we are, just about the same,
Gawky little fellow, dizzy little dame,
Two sleepy people, by dawn's early light,
Much to much in love to say good-night.

Good-night!

Overall Meaning

The song "Two Sleepy People" by Merrill depicts a couple who seem to be tired and comfortable with each other's company. The opening lines describe them as being out of cigarettes yet holding hands, implying a sense of companionship and intimacy. They are both yawning, indicating that they are tired but also that they are relaxed in each other's presence. The lyrics "too much in love to say goodnight" encapsulate the essence of the song, which is that they are so enamored with each other that they do not want their time together to end.

The second verse further emphasizes their cozy and content relationship. They are depicted sitting in a chair and picking on a wishbone, implying that they are comfortable enough with each other to engage in mundane activities. They have nothing to say, yet they are "much too much in love to break away." This line underscores their level of affection and indicates that they do not feel the need to constantly communicate with each other to enjoy their time together.

The purest tone that ever came out of an alto sax. Johnny Hodges could pick up a cold instrument and immediately play it dead in tune. I like this arrangement: kind of oblique.
