Dancing Queen
Meryl Streep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, diggin' the dancing queen

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for the place to go
Where they play the right music, getting in the swing
You come in to look for a king
Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music's high
With a bit of rock music, everything is fine
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine
You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, diggin' the dancing queen

You're a teaser, you turn 'em on
Leave them burning and then you're gone
Looking out for another, anyone will do
You're in the mood for a dance
And when you get the chance

You are the dancing queen, young and sweet, only seventeen
Dancing queen, feel the beat from the tambourine

You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life
See that girl, watch that scene, diggin' the dancing queen

Overall Meaning

The song "Dancing Queen" by ABBA, performed by Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, and Christine Baranski in the movie Mamma Mia!, is an upbeat and energetic tribute to youthful exuberance and dancing. The opening lines, "You can dance, you can jive, having the time of your life," set the tone for the rest of the song. It's all about having fun and enjoying the moment.

The lyrics also tell the story of a young girl who is out looking for a good time, and she finds it on the dance floor. The chorus proclaims her as the "dancing queen," and she becomes the center of attention. The verses describe her as a "teaser" who turns men on but then "leaves them burning" and moves on to the next one. However, the focus remains on the joy and freedom that comes from dancing and being young.

Overall, "Dancing Queen" is a celebration of life and the power of music to bring people together. It's a song that is sure to make anyone feel like getting up and dancing.

My favorite thing about this scene is that they show middle-aged and older women just having fun and being silly for the hell of it. A lot of media tries to make it seem like once a woman hits middle age, especially if she has children, she is not allowed to be fun or silly unless it is to make the children happy. This scene has me LIVING.

so true. if my husband and his friends have a 'few too many' occasionally that is lads being lads even though they are in their 60s! however if we women do it, its rather bad and frowned on, even tho kids have all left home.
