Last Midnight
Meryl Streep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh!

It's the last midnight
It's the last wish
It's the last midnight
Soon it will be boom
Squish!
Told a little lie
Stole a little gold
Broke a little vow
Did you?

Had to get your prince
Had to get your cow
And to get your wish
Doesn't matter how
Anyway, it doesn't matter now

It's the last midnight
It's the boom
Splat!
Nothing but a vast midnight
Everybody smashed flat!

Nothing we can do
Not exactly true
We could always give her the boy

No, of course what really matters is the blame
Someone you can blame
Fine, if that's the thing you enjoy
Placing the blame
If that's the aim
Give me the blame
Just give me the boy

No! (No)
No?

You're so nice
You're not good
You're not bad
You're just nice
I'm not good
I'm not nice
I'm just right
I'm the witch
You're the world

I'm a hitch
I'm what no one believes
I'm the witch
You're all liars and thieves
Like his father
Like his son will be, too
Oh, why bother?
You'll just do what you do

It's the last midnight
So, goodbye all
Coming at you fast, midnight
Soon you'll see the sky fall
Here, you want a bean?
Have another bean
Beans were made for making you rich!
Plant them and they soar
Here, you want some more?
Listen to the roar
Giants by the score!
Well, you can blame another witch

It's the last midnight
It's the last verse
Now, before it's past midnight
I'm leaving you my last curse

I'm leaving you alone
You can tend the garden, it's yours
Separate and alone
Everybody down on all fours

All right, mother, when?
Lost the beans again!
Punish me the way you did then!
Give me claws and a hunch
Just away from this bunch
And the gloom
And the doom

And the boom
Cruuunch!

Overall Meaning

The song "Last Midnight" from the musical "Into the Woods" is performed by the Witch (Meryl Streep) who is lashing out against the other characters in the play who have caused their own destruction. The atmosphere is frenzied and chaotic as the Witch proclaims that it's the "last midnight," the last chance for anyone to change their fate. The first stanza of the song speaks to the characters' misdeeds- stealing, lying, and breaking vows- all for the sake of their own selfish desires. They must now face the consequences of their actions as the clock strikes midnight, and they are doomed to be smashed flat.

In the second stanza, as the Witch realizes the inevitability of their fate, she points out that there is still a chance to save themselves from destruction. They could offer her the boy, but their greed and blame-shifting sidetracks them from this solution. The last part of the song is the Witch's final curse, as she leaves them all to their own devices and walks away, leaving them to tend the garden and face their punishment alone.

Overall, "Last Midnight" is a powerful song that shows the Witch's anger and frustration with the other characters' choices that lead to their destruction. It also showcases Meryl Streep's incredible vocal range and acting abilities, making it one of the most memorable songs in the musical.

I think the ultimate way to insult a person now is telling them quote:
"you're not good,
you're not bad,
you're just nice."

@misterminutes4504

Yes, I'm gonna scream that to someone who thinks they're good

@giansena5536

Actually, she is calling them Fake. While, they only live by a facade, like Red being a mischivious child but putting a innocent girl face. In other hand she tells "Im not good, im not nice, Im just right". In that, she says that shes not trying to fake anyone, shes True in her Nature. Her actions are neither good or bad? She stole a Child, who was raised with all her love and joy. She wants to give Jack to the giant, but, to save all of them. She dont put out any intentions that are not her true self. So its very powerfull, becuse, actually, she is the only one who is not covering her actions, she is actually proud of it, even her ingeunity by being stolen of the beans when she was younger. Her love of Rapunzel, and her unbotherness by the Village Folk. Who fear her just for being a Witch.

@Gian Sena Basically saying they're hypocrites. Omg I love this, I have so much else to say but I can't put it into words

@giansena5536

@Cupid Sucks At Archery Yes. This Musical has so many levels. I just can imagine the Full picture of it, without blowing my mind

@MSTe98

This is basically the Witch giving up. She has no more reason to live, and she finally realizes how completely backwards the world she lives in is: she's careful and follows the rules and gets punished for other people's mistakes, while they get their happily ever after. The way she sees it, in order to get what you wish, you have to be reckless and pass on the consequences to everyone else. She wished for her life to be back the way it was, before she got her beauty back, but it only got worse.

I guess it is time to punish her mother ten times as hard.

@ryancabrera2884

+myspontaneity I don't think she dies though. She knew she would leave them so I figure she either teleported or got dragged to hell with her mother figuring it's more bearable than earth.

@MSTe98

bluerisk Indeed.
