Since 1979, Akita has formed two record labels and has contributed releases to numerous independent record labels. As well as being a prolific artist, he has also written a number of books and has been the editor of several magazines in Japan. He has written about a variety of subjects, mostly about art, avant-garde music and post-modern culture. His more renowned works have been on the topics of BDSM and fetish culture. Other artforms Akita has been interested in include directing and Butoh dance.
The name "Merzbow" comes from German artist Kurt Schwitters' artwork, Merzbau. This was chosen to reflect Akita's dada influence and junk-art aesthetic. In addition to this, Akita has cited a wide range of influences from various progressive rock artists such as Frank Zappa and King Crimson to Japanese bondage.
In 2000, Extreme Records released the 50 CD box set known as the Merzbox. From 2004 onwards, he has been a supporter of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) which has influenced a number of animal-themed releases as well as Akita becoming vegan. Akita's work has been the subject of several remix albums and at least one tribute album. Akita is a prolific musician and has produced over 400 releases since 1980. This, among other achievements, has helped Merzbow to be regarded as the "most important artist in noise music".

How clueless do you gotta be to whine about Relapse re-releasing Venereology, when this label was the one who put out both this album and Pulse Demon back in the day, practically introducing Japanese noise music to the west? Many metalheads in the nineties were eager to explore extremes in music that they hadn't been able to imagine before, that's how Pulse Demon remains the most notorious harsh noise record to this day. I get that this stuff is not for everyone, but y'all act like conservative parents who are concerned that the rock music that their children are listening to is "satanic noise". This album is dope, and along with many Merzbow albums released in that time period, it influenced many extreme metal and industrial artists.
@noisist_dotexe
Agree im not really a fan of Merzbow but i like Venereology and i don't bash ppl for liking stuff like Wall Noise either
@thathandleistakentrythisone
This is quite literally satanic noise
@noisist_dotexe
@@thathandleistakentrythisone No its not satanic. Only very loud and harsh. Metal is satanic noise. (I know it doesn't have to be but quite often it is.)
@elkyubi4281
Ugly Robot False, the satan's thematic is just part the lofi-black metal, "true Norwegian black metal" or the first wave of black metal. Just a quick mention to clarify is that in the genre of black metal at this point of history not every artist pick or utilize the negatives symbols of monotheistic religions.
@user-zp1te7zb1t
this is the closest to real satanic noise tho
@ThatDifferentDude
I like this at low volume. This kind of stuff helps me sleep. I know that sounds weird but it breaks up repetitive thought patterns.
@dande5009
I listen to a lot of Japa-noise and all round industrial music while sleeping
@centralscrutinizer66
It’s good for studying!
@nelmvn
Yup, I agreed what you said. I listening this kind of stuff when I need to calm myself or I need to focus. Ofc, low volume is the best way to listening a noise music.
