L'héritage
Mes Aïeux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mes Aieux's song L'héritage tell the story of the singer's experiences at his father's funeral. He descends upon his family's home to attend the event and goes to see the priest. The funeral home is deserted except for him and his deceased father. He is somewhat unsure how to proceed, but he tries to pray for his father's soul. As he prays, a miracle happens - his father's corpse sits up and speaks to him. He tells his son that he shouldn't be afraid and then proceeds to confide in him about their past.

The father tells his son that he was never there for him during his childhood and was always drunk. He acknowledges that he was impolite but appreciates that his son has come to see him at his funeral. The father then decides to name his son as his only heir and gives him a bottle of liquor as his inheritance. The son is warned not to drink from the bottle because it's cursed and contains all of the father's wasted life. Despite the warning, the son cannot resist and drinks from the bottle, eventually becoming drunk and unable to stop drinking.

The song is a commentary on the effects and legacy of alcoholism in families. It highlights the destructive nature of substance abuse and shows how it can strain family relationships. The story's twist ending also provides an interesting look at how inheritance can sometimes be a burden and not the blessing it's perceived to be.
