Le vieux pont
Mes Aïeux Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Qui s’acharne sur nous, avec des airs moroses;

Overall Meaning

Mes Aïeux's song "Le vieux pont" tells the story of a person walking along an old path and arriving at a river that flows towards the savanna. As the sun sets and the horizon becomes dotted with pine trees, the singer stops at an old, crooked bridge covered in moss and thorns. The bridge lays over a clear and shallow stream, which was muddied by the footsteps of their childhood. The bridge is a relic of the past, reminding the singer of the passage of time and the cruelty of it's ways.

The bridge is a place of tranquillity that is occasionally graced by the wind, as well as the soft tunes of a nightingale. The singer contemplates the harshness of the times which do not respect the misery of things, and the frailty of life, which is so often carried away by the river of time. The scene invokes an inspiring connection to those who have departed before us, such as grandparents buried beneath the earth. The verse "Le temps passé ne revient plus" is a powerful reminder of the inevitability of mortality.

Overall, the lyrics are profound and intimate, with a sense of peaceful sadness. The singer's contemplation accentuates the beauty of the old bridge and the passing of time.

And the old bridge sleeps above the stream,

In the stormy nights as in the calm midday.

Serene, I contemplated this wreck of time

Qui s’acharne sur nous, avec des airs moroses;
That persists on us with gloomy airs;

And I felt the cruelty of the years,

That does not respect the misery of things.

I saw reapers with their golden sheaves,

Qui revenaient joyeux d’esperance secrète…
Returning joyfully with secret hope...

The ancestors have left, but their children still

Cross the old bridge in their rugged cart.

Et je songe à ceux-là que je n’ai pas connus,
And I think of those whom I did not know,

Aux grands-parents absents, abimés sous la terre :
Of the absent grandparents, buried under the earth:

Them who sang: The past time never comes back,

Reminding me that one day, alas! we must be silent!
