Metallica first found commercial success with the release of its third album, Master of Puppets (1986), which is cited as one of the heaviest metal albums and the band's best work. The band's next album, ...And Justice for All (1988), gave Metallica its first Grammy Award nomination. Its self-titled fifth album, Metallica (1991), was the band's first not to root predominantly in thrash metal; it appealed to a more mainstream audience, achieving substantial commercial success and selling over 16 million copies in the United States to date, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan era. After experimenting with different genres and directions in subsequent releases, Metallica returned to its thrash metal roots with the release of its ninth album, Death Magnetic (2008), which drew similar praise to that of the band's earlier albums. This was followed by the band's 10th studio album, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016), with its 11th album, 72 Seasons, releasing in 2023.
In 2000, Metallica led the case against the peer-to-peer file sharing service Napster, in which the band and several other artists filed lawsuits against the service for sharing their copyright-protected material without consent, eventually reaching a settlement. Metallica was the subject of the acclaimed 2004 documentary film Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, which documented the troubled production of the band's eighth album, St. Anger (2003), and the internal struggles within the band at the time. In 2009, Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band co-wrote the screenplay for and starred alongside Dane DeHaan in the 2013 concert film Metallica: Through the Never, in which the band performed live against a fictional thriller storyline.
Metallica has released 10 studio albums, four live albums (including two performances with the San Francisco Symphony), 12 video albums, a cover album, two extended plays, 37 singles and 39 music videos. The band has won nine Grammy Awards from 23 nominations, and its last six studio albums (beginning with Metallica) have consecutively debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Metallica ranks as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, having sold over 125 million albums worldwide as of 2018. Metallica has been listed as one of the greatest artists of all time by magazines such as Rolling Stone, which ranked the band No. 61 on its 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list. As of 2017, Metallica is the third-best-selling music artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, selling a total of 58 million albums in the United States.

Bleeding Me

I'm digging my way to something
I'm digging my way to something better
I'm pushing to stay
I'm pushing to stay with something
I'm pushing to stay with something better
Whoa oh
I'm sowing the seeds
I'm sowing the seeds I've taken
I'm sowing the seeds I take for granted
This thorn in my side
This thorn in my side is from the tree
This thorn in my side is from the tree I've planted
Ooh, it tears me and I bleed, yeah
And I bleed yeah, yeah, ha
Caught under wheel's roll
I take the leech, I'm bleeding me
Can't stop to save my soul
I take the leash that's leading me
I'm bleeding me, oh
Oh, I can't take it
Caught under wheel's roll
Oh, the bleeding of me
Of me, yeah
The bleeding of me
Caught under wheel's roll
I take the leech, I'm bleeding me
Can't stop to save my soul
I take the leash that's leading me
I'm bleeding me, whoa whoa
Oh, I can't take it
Caught under wheel's roll
Oh, the bleeding of me
Oh, the bleeding of me
Woo, ah
I am the beast that feeds the feast
I am the blood, I am release
Come make me pure
Bleed me a cure
I'm caught, I'm caught, I'm caught under
Caught under wheel's roll
I take the leech, I'm bleeding me
Can't stop to save my soul
I take the leash that's leading me
I'm bleeding me
Oh, I can't take it
I can't take it
I can't take it
Oh, the bleeding of me
(Come on, bleed me)
Ummm, yeah
I'm digging my way
I'm digging my way to something
I'm digging my way to something better
I'm pushing to stay
I'm pushing to stay with something
I'm pushing to stay with something better
With something better
The lyrics of Metallica's song Bleeding Me can be interpreted in various ways, but the main idea seems to be about the struggle to achieve something better while dealing with the consequences of past choices and actions. The first verses present a progression, digging and pushing towards something better, but also acknowledging the seeds that have been taken for granted and the thorn in the side that comes from a tree one has planted. The imagery suggests a blend of hope and pain, with the tearing of the thorn being a source of bleeding, a recurring motif in the song.
The chorus brings more tension and urgency to the lyrics, with the singer feeling caught under wheel's roll, unable to stop the bleeding and taking the leash that's leading them. The metaphor of the leech adds a sense of parasitic attachment, a burden that is draining the singer's life force. The repetition of the lines "I'm bleeding me" and "Oh, I can't take it" intensify the feeling of despair and helplessness, while the "whoa oh" and "woo ah" interjections may suggest a mixture of agony and empowerment.
The final verse introduces a new aspect, as the singer proclaims themselves to be "the beast that feeds the feast" and "the blood that is release". This could be interpreted as a declaration of personal power, or as a confession of guilt and responsibility for the pain and suffering caused by one's actions. The call for someone to "bleed me a cure" could be seen as a plea for forgiveness or redemption, or a challenge to someone to match the intensity and sacrifice of the singer's bleeding.
Overall, Bleeding Me showcases Metallica's ability to blend powerful music and lyrics with intricate emotions and themes, exploring the complexities of resilience, endurance, and hope amidst life's struggle.
