The album has sold over 25 million copies world wide. It was Metallica's first, more popular sounding album. The track was composed and written by James Hetfield to his girlfriend whom he missed during long touring sessions. The famous introduction was born quite by accident, during a telephone conversation with his girlfriend: James held the receiver with one hand, and fingered the open strings on the guitar with the other. It is noteworthy that at first Hatfield did not want to show the song to his bandmates, because he considered it too personal. In addition, stylistically, the composition was sharply out of all that Metallica had done before. However, the rest of the band liked the composition and they were able to convince the vocalist. The track became a massive hit instantly after the album was published. Producer for this song is Bob Rock, and Lars Ulrich is a co-writer. It's also the only Metallica song that Hetfield plays its guitar solo instead of Kirk Hammett.

My dad was a huge metal fan. He loved Metallica - he had all the albums from Kill 'Em All to Hardwired. I got introduced to Metallica when he played Master Of Puppets in the car one day. This was one of his favorite songs. Last year he got Corona, and he survived, only to die from cancer not long after. We played this song at his funeral. R.I.P Dad. And nothing else matters.
