Metallica first found commercial success with the release of its third album, Master of Puppets (1986), which is cited as one of the heaviest metal albums and the band's best work. The band's next album, ...And Justice for All (1988), gave Metallica its first Grammy Award nomination. Its self-titled fifth album, Metallica (1991), was the band's first not to root predominantly in thrash metal; it appealed to a more mainstream audience, achieving substantial commercial success and selling over 16 million copies in the United States to date, making it the best-selling album of the SoundScan era. After experimenting with different genres and directions in subsequent releases, Metallica returned to its thrash metal roots with the release of its ninth album, Death Magnetic (2008), which drew similar praise to that of the band's earlier albums. This was followed by the band's 10th studio album, Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016), with its 11th album, 72 Seasons, releasing in 2023.
In 2000, Metallica led the case against the peer-to-peer file sharing service Napster, in which the band and several other artists filed lawsuits against the service for sharing their copyright-protected material without consent, eventually reaching a settlement. Metallica was the subject of the acclaimed 2004 documentary film Metallica: Some Kind of Monster, which documented the troubled production of the band's eighth album, St. Anger (2003), and the internal struggles within the band at the time. In 2009, Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band co-wrote the screenplay for and starred alongside Dane DeHaan in the 2013 concert film Metallica: Through the Never, in which the band performed live against a fictional thriller storyline.
Metallica has released 10 studio albums, four live albums (including two performances with the San Francisco Symphony), 12 video albums, a cover album, two extended plays, 37 singles and 39 music videos. The band has won nine Grammy Awards from 23 nominations, and its last six studio albums (beginning with Metallica) have consecutively debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Metallica ranks as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time, having sold over 125 million albums worldwide as of 2018. Metallica has been listed as one of the greatest artists of all time by magazines such as Rolling Stone, which ranked the band No. 61 on its 100 Greatest Artists of All Time list. As of 2017, Metallica is the third-best-selling music artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991, selling a total of 58 million albums in the United States.

Now That We're Dead
Metallica Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That we should see the light
When reaper calls, may it be
That we walk straight and right
When doubt returns, may it be
That faith shall permeate our scars
When we're seduced, then may it be
All sinners, a future
All saints, a past
Beginning, the ending
Return to ash
Now that we're dead, my dear
We can be together
Now that we're dead, my dear
We can live forever
When all is pain, may it be
It's all we've ever known
When flame consumes, may it be
It warms our dying bones
When loss has won, may it be
It's you I'm madly fighting for
When kingdom comes, may it be
We walk right through that open door
All sinners, a future
All saints, a past
Beginning, the ending
Return to ash
Now that we're dead, my dear
We can be together
Now that we're dead, my dear
We can live forever
All sinners, a future
All saints, a past
Beginning, the ending
Return to ash
Now that we're dead, my dear
We can be together
Now that we're dead, my dear
We can live, we can live forever
Return to ashes, shed this skin
Beyond the black, we rise again
We shall live forever
In "Now That We're Dead," Metallica explores themes of life, death, and what comes after. The lyrics are a mixture of hopefulness and despair, reflecting the human experience of facing mortality. It begins with the line "when darkness falls, may it be that we should see the light," which suggests that the band is embracing the idea that life is finite and that we should appreciate every moment of it. The lyrics also touch on the hope that when we die, we will join our loved ones who have already passed on. The line "now that we're dead, my dear, we can be together" is both melancholic and romantic. It speaks to the human desire for connection and companionship, even in death.
The song's chorus is both affirming and nihilistic. The repetition of the line "now that we're dead, my dear, we can live forever" suggests that death is not an end, but the beginning of something new. However, the phrase "return to ash" implies that any sense of individuality or meaningful existence is ultimately fleeting. Despite this, the band seems to embrace both perspectives, encouraging listeners to live life to the fullest, while also acknowledging the inevitability of death.
Metallica's "Now That We're Dead" is a reflection of their signature sound, blending elements of heavy metal and hard rock. The song is the third track on their 10th studio album, "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct," and was released in 2016. It was produced by Greg Fidelman, who also produced the band's previous album, "Death Magnetic." Metallica has described the album as a return to their roots, with a focus on heavy, riff-driven songs and emotionally charged lyrics. The album received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, reaching the top of the charts in several countries.

This is just what Metallica needs, a simple, clean video for each of
their song. The band plays tight in a studio, black ensemble as their
signature for the outfits, amps, great lighting. It still allows the listeners to have
different meanings to the song as James said it in an interview back in
the 90s but also maintaining the band's presence in digital media to
stay relatable with current generation. Coz their music speaks for
themselves, and their live performance is much more awaited. Their live
performance will always sound more attractive than from hearing the
music through the LPs. Long live Metallica!!!
