Turn the Page
Metallica Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On a long and lonesome highway, east of Omaha
You can listen to the engines moanin' out his one old song
Think about the woman or the girl you knew the night before
But your thoughts will soon be wanderin', the way they always do
When you're ridin' sixteen hours and there's nothin' much to do
And you don't feel much like ridin', you wish the trip was through
Here I am, on the road again, here I am, up on the stage
Here I go, playin' star again, there I go, turn the page

So you walk into this restaurant, all strung out from the road
And you feel the eyes upon you, as you're shakin' off the cold
You pretend it doesn't bother you, but you just want to explode (yeah, oh)

Most times you can't hear 'em talk, other times you can
All the same old cliché's, "is it woman, or is it man"
And you always seem outnumbered, you don't dare make your stand
Make your stand

Ah, here I am, on the road again, here I am, up on the stage
Here I go, playin' star again, there I go, turn the page
Whoa, hey

Out there in the spotlight, you're a million miles away
Every ounce of energy, you try and give away
As the sweat pours out your body, like the music that you play

Later in the evenin', as you lie awake in bed
With the echoes of the amplifiers, ringin' in your head
You smoke the day's last cigarette, rememberin' what she said
What she said

Oh, here I am, on the road again, here I am, up on that stage
Here I go, playin' star again, there I go, turn the page
Here I go, turn that page
Here I go, there I go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, I'm a rock and roll god
Here I go
Here I go

Here I go, oh whoa
Here I go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Metallica's song "Turn the Page" tell the story of a travelling musician who spends his life on the road, performing and living alone, constantly moving from place to place. The song captures the loneliness, monotony, and exhaustion of the touring lifestyle from multiple perspectives. The first verse talks about the long, lonesome highways and the monotonous hours of driving with nothing to do but think. The second verse depicts the experience of entering a new town and feeling the scrutiny of the locals in a restaurant or hotel. The chorus highlights the contrast between the performer's life on stage, where they play the "star" and command attention, and their offstage life, where they feel invisible and unheard.

The third verse describes the experience of performing on stage, where the performer puts all their energy into entertaining the crowd, but still feels distant and removed from the audience. The final verse reflects on the loneliness of the travelling lifestyle and the exhaustion that comes with the relentless cycle of touring, performing, and moving again.

Overall, "Turn the Page" is a melancholy and introspective song about the hardships of the travelling musician's life, but it also showcases the power and energy of rock and roll.

Been here...a homeless heroin addict & dancer. Turned the page 20 years ago. Clean, sober & my kids turned out just fine. Thank God.

Keep it up, we all stray from the right way, make sure your kids know the value of life and that their father is there when they wake up and to kiss them when they go to sleep.

@piercedxangel

@ Thank you! Unfortunately my daughter's dad is a deadbeat & I raised her alone. She's much better off without him💜
