Whiskey in the Jar
Metallica Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I was goin' over
The Cork and Kerry Mountains
I saw Captain Farrell
And his money, he was countin'
I first produced my pistol
I then produced my rapier
I said, "Stand and deliver oh, or the devil he may take ya"
Yeah

I took all of his money
And it was a pretty penny
I took all of his money
Yeah, and I brought it home to Molly
She swore that she loved me
No, never would she leave me
But the devil take that woman
Yeah, for you know she tricked me easy

Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da
Whack for my daddy, oh
Whack for my daddy, oh
There's whiskey in the jar, oh

Being drunk and weary
I went to Molly's chamber
Takin' Molly with me
But I never knew the danger
For about six or maybe seven
Yeah, in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired my pistols
And I shot him with both barrels

Yeah, musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, ha, yeah
Whack for my daddy, oh
Whack for my daddy, oh
There's whiskey in the jar, oh

Yeah, whiskey, yo, whiskey

Oh, yeah, yeah, oh, go
Oh, oh, yeah

Now some men like a fishin'
And some men like the fowlin'
And some men like to hear
To hear the cannonball roarin'
Me, I like sleepin'
'Specially in my Molly's chamber
But here I am in prison
Here I am with a ball and chain, yeah

Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, heh, heh
Whack for my daddy, oh
Whack for my daddy, oh
There's whiskey in the jar, oh, yeah

Whiskey in the jar, oh, yeah

Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, hey

Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da
Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "Whiskey in the Jar" is a traditional Irish song with a history dating back to the 17th century, but the version that is popular today was recorded by Irish band The Dubliners in the 1960s. Metallica covered the song in 1998 and gave it a heavy metal twist that brought it to a new generation of rock fans. The lyrics tell a story of a man on the run who robs Captain Farrell, brings the money home to his lover Molly, but she betrays him and he ends up killing Farrell and being imprisoned.

The song starts with the singer walking through the Cork and Kerry Mountains, where he meets Captain Farrell counting his money. The singer pulls out his pistol and rapier, telling Farrell to "stand and deliver" or else the devil will take him. This sets the tone for the rest of the song as a tale of adventure, betrayal, and consequences.

The next verse sees the singer go home to his lover Molly, where she swears her love to him, but it's revealed that she tricked him and he ends up killing Captain Farrell when he comes looking for him. In the final verse, the singer reflects on his current situation, stuck in prison with a ball and chain, dreaming of sleeping in Molly's chamber once again.

The song's chorus, "Musha rain dum a doo, dum a da, Whack for my daddy, oh, whack for my daddy, oh, there's whiskey in the jar, oh," is a traditional Irish refrain that has no real meaning, but adds to the song's overall feel of traditional Celtic music.

As western music is illegal in Iran, in 1998 I smuggled Garage inc album cassette in a loose tea box from Dubai to Shiraz, Iran. I was 20 years old fanatic Metallica fan. Deprived from buying their albums or going to their concerts in my country. I had a Sony Sport Walkman. Used to hide it in my jacket sleeve and hide the headphones under my wooly hat. Walking up and down Cinema Saadi Street, listening to my heros. Two years later I immigrated to the UK and went to 3 live show, including the one that lars missed and joe played the drums.

That's an awesome story. I saw them in Tucson when they had the snake pit, whatever concert that was, and then I saw them in Phoenix. I saw AC/DC when the ban had 1st been lifted from them playing in Tucson. They got a 10 year ban for cracking the ceiling with their cannons. They kicked ass too.
