Dead Disco
Metric Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Push it to the east coast
Step down turn around
Push it to the west
Need less, use less
We're asking for too much I guess
Cause all we get is
Dead disco
Dead funk
Dead rock and roll
Remodel
Everything has been done

Tits out, pants down
Overnight to London
Touch down, look around
Everyone's the same
World wide, air tight
No one's got a face left to blame
And all we get is

Dead disco
Dead funk
Dead rock and roll
Remodel
Everything has been done

Dead disco
Dead funk
Dead rock and roll
Remodel
Everything has been done

I know, I know you tried to change things

I know you tried to change
I know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Metric’s song Dead Disco can be interpreted as a commentary on the homogenization of culture and the repetition of trends in the entertainment industry. In the first stanza, the lyrics speak to the idea of constantly moving to new locations yet finding the same things, implying a sense of disillusionment with the world. The line "Need less, use less / We're asking for too much I guess / Cause all we get is" speaks to the idea that despite wanting more, society is only given more of the same, leading to a feeling of stagnation.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Dead disco / Dead funk / Dead rock and roll / Remodel / Everything has been done" which seems to be referencing the idea that culture and music have become lifeless and repetitive, where everything that can be done has already been done. The phrase "Tits out, pants down / Overnight to London / Touch down, look around / Everyone's the same" further emphasizes the idea that the world has become a homogeneous and unimaginative place where everyone is following the same trends.

The final line "I know, I know you tried to change things / I know you tried to change" could be seen as a call to action for individuals to attempt to break away from the cycle of unoriginality and create something new.

Cough It Up

I rate them very high!

BuyETH

Yes, they should be internationally famous. However, Emily once said in an interview that she likes not having her image plastered everywhere, so she can focus on the work.

Theodore De'Hart

Maybe when they first came out. I'd say they are under appreciated.

SpockBoy

Brilliant song. I love how the guitar player does a Keith Richards style guitar riff @ 1:24 to underline the "everything's been done" aspect of the song. Criminally underrated band.
