Control
Metro Station Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Another cigarette
And I'm so bored
Your words aren't making sense

I was taken
But you were waiting
One more drink
And I'm convinced

Not one more sound
Let your hair down
Take the low road
No one will know

Whoa, I feel just like we're taking control
Of the night
Whoa, I feel just like we're losing control
But if you let go then I'll let go tonight

Another minute lived
If you take me
I'll take what you will give

I was late and
She kept waiting
But I hope she knows where I've been

not one more sound
Let your hair down
Take the low road
No one will know

Whoa, I feel just like we're taking control
Of the night
Whoa, I feel just like we're losing control
But if you let go then I'll let go tonight

I'm coming down
Bring me up
Take it off
Let's just touch

Whoa, I feel just like we're taking control
Of the night

Whoa, I feel just like we're losing control
But if you let go then I'll let go tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Metro Station's "Control" suggest a scene in which the singer is smoking another cigarette and feeling incredibly bored, while the person they are with is rambling on incoherently. The singer is taken with this person but has also been waiting for them, and after one more drink they are convinced to let loose and take the low road. The singer feels like they are taking control of the night, but also losing control at the same time. They try to reassure their companion that they will let go if they let go.

In the second verse, the singer reflects on how they were late and someone kept waiting for them. They hope that the person they were late to meet knows where they've been. The song then takes a turn towards sexual desire as the singer urges their companion to bring them up, take it off, and just touch.

Overall, the lyrics seem to depict a night spent with someone the singer is attracted to, but also somewhat disconnected from. They want to let go and feel in control, but also recognize the danger in losing control.

I was 14 when I first saw this and I totally thought this was how drinking and high school and partying and getting older was going to be. I am now 22 and I am currently drinking alone in my apartment with my cats while watching Futurama.

Titty Sprinkles

That sounds like a hello of a party; booze, cats, and futurama. Honestly, what more do you need?

+Sarah Jean Its what you make of it. This Generation is all talk and no walk.

+Sarah Jean Agreed I feel so let down by reality. High school and college parties looked so fun in movies/tv when in reality they are mostly lame (especially HS parties). I mean people don't even dance much because they're "too cool" for that. Chilling with a couple of friends is way better than getting trashed around a bunch of strangers and panicking when the cops come.
