PRIDE
Metus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For food
They gave me
Some poisonous plants
For my thirst
Vinegar
It became their trap
Hate and pride
Have become the snare

Haughty ones will remain so blind
Won't taste the fruit from the tree of life
Burning anger from the sky
Woe to all haughty minds

For food
They gave me
Some poisonous plants
For my thirst
Vinegar
It became their trap
Wickedness
Has become their snare

Haughty ones won't remain so proud
Fear will devour stone cold hearts

Burning anger from the sky
Woe to all haughty minds

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Metus's song "Pride" describe an individual who is mistreated by others who offer poisonous plants for food and vinegar for thirst, which becomes the trap of the perpetrators. They embody hate, pride, and wickedness which snare them in their own web of darkness. These individuals are too blinded by their haughtiness to see beyond their own self-absorption or to taste the fruit from the tree of life. However, the tables turn when their pride takes a fall, and they are left with fear that devours their stone-cold hearts. They experience the burning anger from the sky as they face the consequences of their actions, and the song warns that their haughtiness leads to their own woe.

The song reflects the dangers of a skewed, prideful view of self and the world, and warns that pride comes before a fall. The lyrics use food and thirst as a metaphor for basic human needs, which the perpetrators manipulate for their own selfish purposes. The presence of vinegar as a sign of bitterness and ugliness, further shows the distorted views of the perpetrators. The imagery of a trap demonstrates how the perpetrators' attempts to bring harm ultimately ensnare themselves, highlighting the self-destructive nature of pride and hate.

Everyone was so perfectly cast- hard to pick a favourite but I must say Alison Steadman’s squawking Mrs Bennet really brought a lot of life and comedy to every scene she was in 😂

In my opinion, this is the best film adaptation of this Jane Austen novel. The cast is beyond praise

Spiklething

Except it wasn’t a film. It was a six part television show.

I loved everything about this series, absolutely everything, and one little thing that stood out for me was precisely Julia S. playing Lydia, with her cheekiness and raspy voice. She was infuriating and hilarious and no other actress playing the Bennet's youngest daughter ever came close to having her charisma. That raspy voice! Loved it.

Kitty Katz

Don’t forget the grating annoying laugh! Her portrayal of Lydia was sheer genius!

The one thing I didn't like was that she clearly was so very much older than the character. At times, it was cringing to see this mature woman play a teenager.
