The members of Mew started playing music together in 1995. Mew first achieved success in Denmark with their album Frengers, although their debut album, A Triumph for Man, had been met with much critical acclaim back in 1997. At the 2003 Danish Music Critics Award Show, Mew won the awards for "Album of the Year" and "Band of the Year." Until this point Mew was relatively unknown outside of Denmark; however after a European tour supporting R.E.M. Mew began to attract wider attention. After releasing the critically-acclaimed album And The Glass Handed Kites, featuring contributions from J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr, Mew has built on their success in Denmark as well as attracting attention from other countries in Europe and Asia. In the summer of 2006, they toured as the supporting act for Bloc Party in the U.S. as well as for Kasabian in the U.S. and Canada in the fall. After these tours, they returned to Denmark to work on new material.
On March 14th, 2007, Mew embarked on their first ever headlining tour in America with Oh No! Oh My! as the supporting act. Their fifth studio album, No More Stories/Are Told Today/I'm Sorry/They Washed Away//No More Stories/The World Is Grey/I'm Tired/Let's Wash Away, was released in August 25, 2009. They've also toured with Nine Inch Nails, Kings of Leon and Sigur Rós. In 2010, they released a greatest hits compilation called Eggs are Funny. They began performing new material in 2012 at Roskilde Festival, and released their sixth studio album, +- in 2015. Madsen left the band the same year, and the band began writing new material for their new album shortly after they concluded their tour. They released their seventh studio album, Visuals, after releasing a few singles in the months preceding its release. They embarked on tours for the album, as well as a tour celebrating the 15th anniversary of their breakthrough album Frengers in 2018.

Mew Lyrics

But I took a wrong turn, there
For I zigged when I should have zagged
It's a somber turn out tonight
Chemistry class
Try to do our part
Something happened in the dark
And they did remember this time
To keep it inside
Now we keep the water still
On the broken window sill
For if not we have to move
It is green outside
Where it seems magical
And if nothing works
We'll do nothing
I hope we're on time
And we should'nt look at the sky
The perilous light
We were not allowed outside
And no one could tell us why
I got worried
With shaky hands
So we said the words that we kept
For worrying times
I was on my way, I swear
But I lost my way somewhere
And the trees were glistening
From the silver trickling water
When the rain returns
We had our suspicions
Thinking what my heart confirmed
It is sweet outside
Where it seems magical
And if nothing works
We'll do nothing
Save yourself tonight
Asleep in the dark
I hope we're on time
The lyrics of Mew's song "Beach" appear to revolve around a sense of lost direction and the uncertainty that comes with it. In the first verse, the singer describes how they took a wrong turn and ended up in a somber place. The second verse highlights a moment in a chemistry class where something unexpected occurs in the dark, and the group tries to keep it contained. The singer implies that if they don't hold onto this secret and keep it together, they will be forced to move on, which would require them to uproot their lives and change their direction once again.

I was on my way, I swear
I had a plan and was headed towards it with confidence
But I took a wrong turn, there
But I faced a setback and went off-course
For I zigged when I should have zagged
I made a wrong move when I should have made the right one
It's a somber turn out tonight
The situation today seems gloomy and depressing
Chemistry class
At school, in our chemistry class
Try to do our part
We were trying to contribute our fair share
Something happened in the dark
An unexpected event occurred in the darkness
We bought raincoats and pretty charms
To prepare for the unexpected, we got raincoats and beautiful lucky symbols
And they did remember this time
This time they were careful not to forget
To keep it inside
To keep what was hidden inside where it should be
Now we keep the water still
Now we keep the water calm and undisturbed
On the broken window sill
On the windowsill that is not in a great condition
For if not we have to move
Because otherwise we would need to relocate
It is green outside
The environment outside is lush green
Where it seems magical
Where it appears charming and mystical
And if nothing works
Even if everything fails
We'll do nothing
We will not take any action
I hope we're on time
I hope we can accomplish our goal before it's too late
And we should'nt look at the sky
We should refrain from looking at the sky
The perilous light
The dangerous light
We were not allowed outside
We were prohibited from going outdoors
And no one could tell us why
And nobody knew the reason behind it
I got worried
I started to feel anxious
With shaky hands
My hands trembling with nervousness
So we said the words that we kept
Then we uttered the words that we had kept hidden
For worrying times
For times when we are anxious and nervous
But I lost my way somewhere
But then I got lost and couldn't find the right path
And the trees were glistening
And the trees were sparkling
From the silver trickling water
Due to the flow of silver water in the surroundings
When the rain returns
When it starts raining again
We had our suspicions
We had doubts and suspicions
Thinking what my heart confirmed
My intuition confirmed my doubts
It is sweet outside
The outside environment is very pleasant
And if nothing works
If everything else fails
We'll do nothing
We will not take any action
Save yourself tonight
Protect yourself tonight
Asleep in the dark
Sleeping in the darkness
I hope we're on time
I hope we can make it on time

Something happened in the dark

I love Mew. They're magical to say the least. Every song takes me to a beautiful euphoric place. I really can't describe their music with words, they do no justice.
