The members of Mew started playing music together in 1995. Mew first achieved success in Denmark with their album Frengers, although their debut album, A Triumph for Man, had been met with much critical acclaim back in 1997. At the 2003 Danish Music Critics Award Show, Mew won the awards for "Album of the Year" and "Band of the Year." Until this point Mew was relatively unknown outside of Denmark; however after a European tour supporting R.E.M. Mew began to attract wider attention. After releasing the critically-acclaimed album And The Glass Handed Kites, featuring contributions from J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr, Mew has built on their success in Denmark as well as attracting attention from other countries in Europe and Asia. In the summer of 2006, they toured as the supporting act for Bloc Party in the U.S. as well as for Kasabian in the U.S. and Canada in the fall. After these tours, they returned to Denmark to work on new material.
On March 14th, 2007, Mew embarked on their first ever headlining tour in America with Oh No! Oh My! as the supporting act. Their fifth studio album, No More Stories/Are Told Today/I'm Sorry/They Washed Away//No More Stories/The World Is Grey/I'm Tired/Let's Wash Away, was released in August 25, 2009. They've also toured with Nine Inch Nails, Kings of Leon and Sigur Rós. In 2010, they released a greatest hits compilation called Eggs are Funny. They began performing new material in 2012 at Roskilde Festival, and released their sixth studio album, +- in 2015. Madsen left the band the same year, and the band began writing new material for their new album shortly after they concluded their tour. They released their seventh studio album, Visuals, after releasing a few singles in the months preceding its release. They embarked on tours for the album, as well as a tour celebrating the 15th anniversary of their breakthrough album Frengers in 2018.

Satellites
Mew Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hone in on the buzz in ways you could not
I like you real silver-like
Oh see them fast, take off at last
And we get better
I wanna breathe in a sunlight beam
I wanna be with a girl like she
Step out fast
Hone in on the buzz in ways you could not
Know, my own electricity
You did this to me
I want someone to carry me
Oh, ill-advised, your desire
Tulip bell
And I'd rather be a satellite
And I'm picking up the phone
And I'd rather be a satellite
And I'm picking up the phone
Remember when
It was then we sealed to unlock never again
The way we might on movie night
(Suspend disbelief)
And this is much better
(I can see you crying)
None of these remedies, I feel
Could make things matter that much
It's only right on movie night
(Solemn summer)
And I'd rather be a satellite
And I'm picking up the phone
Picking up the phone
And I'd rather be a satellite
And I'm picking up the phone
Eleven past
I love all the things that are wrong with you
Know my own electricity
You did this to me
I like you real silver-like
Oh see them fast, take off at last
And we get better
And I'd rather be a satellite
And I'm picking up the phone
And I'd rather be a satellite
And I'm picking up the phone
Picking up the phone
My life is my own
And now I'm always home
[x2]
That's where I spend my time
What, you think I'm up all night?
That's where I spend my time
What, you think I'm up all night?
The lyrics to Mew's "Satellites" are somewhat abstract, but a few themes emerge throughout the song. The song seems to be about the desire for human connection, particularly in the face of isolation or loneliness. The opening lines suggest a sense of urgency, as the singer wants to "hone in on the buzz" and "swim fast" to reach someone. The repeated line "and we get better" implies that this connection is important for personal growth and development.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of being a satellite or being disconnected from reality. The desire to be a satellite could be interpreted as wanting to escape from the constraints of everyday life, to float above it all and observe from afar. However, the repeated line "and I'm picking up the phone" suggests that the singer still wants to connect with someone, even if that connection is mediated by technology.
The final lines of the song suggest a kind of acceptance or resignation: "My life is my own, and now I'm always home." This could be interpreted as a recognition that true connection is difficult to achieve, and that sometimes we must be content with the solitude of our own lives.

The strange thing about Mew is that their songs grow on you unlike any other band. I find myself finding new favorite melodies in nearly every album over the span of years. I can't think of another band that has done that for me.
@MeatEatingSissy
I hated this song at first, but I keep coming back. I guess I honed in on the buzz in ways I could not know
