After years in the making here at last is Illumination, the fully realised debut album from Melbourne's favourite psychedelic indie-electronic adventurers Miami Horror. With Illumination, Miami Horror has delivered on two years of teeth-cutting live shows and an ever escalating wave of buzz that’s made the group bonafide blog darlings the world over. But what’s most amazing about the grand arrival of Illumination is that the roots of the record stretch back countless moons to when Miami Horror began as just one synthesizer-obsessed producer in 2007 huddled over a laptop in a bedroom-come-studio and the album itself just a spark waiting to be lit.
The afore mentioned synth tragic was, and let’s face it still is, electronic young gun Ben Plant, who kick started Miami Horror out of a love of Roland keyboards and French house, landing himself on Pitchfork’s hot-list overnight and copping a barrage of high profile remix requests from the likes of Datarock, PNAU and The Presets.
Yet it was while Ben was punching out 2008’s epochal Bravado EP that Miami Horror took off in a completely new and different direction. Characteristically wanting to flex his creative muscle and avoid the limitations of being stereotyped as simply a dance or electro act, Ben rewired Miami Horror’s genetic makeup, deputising the talents of Josh Moriarty, Aaron Shanahan and Daniel Whitechurch to form a new live band persona of Miami Horror, a whole new beast immeasurably more exciting than before.
“It started out that I didn’t want to have any guitar on the album besides a little funk guitar or disco bass,” Ben grins while explaining the turning point for Miami Horror’s evolution. “But then Josh came in and started playing all these other parts that sounded amazing. Paired with what I was working on, nobody was doing anything like it, so I knew we had to turn those sounds into a live thing and just go wild.”
It worked. Since the switch, Miami Horror has launched into dizzying new stratospheres, their well-polished chops as a group making for some unmissable sets at Australia’s biggest festivals, and that’s not to mention some A-list support slot call ups for everyone from Phoenix, Friendly Fires and La Roux to a hand-picked hook up from Lily Allen.

I'm coming back with answers
Don't try to call
My telephone, it's disconnected
And I don't know where I'm going
But can you guide me
But if I find love where I'm going
'Cause in your own space
You're disconnected
And in your own mind
You're not affected
And in your own time
You're still attracted but in your own life
This heart attack
I've gotta get away not coming back
I want some downtime
So call me when you can and I'll be fine
I've found the time to be alone
I don't know what you're asking
I'm waiting by the telephone
And you're still barking
My heart stops, it isn't going
Could you revive me?
I think I'm lost without knowing
So come and find me
'Cause in the same space
We're disconnected
And in your own mind
You're not attracted
But in your own life over reacted
And in your own time
This heart attack, I think
I'll go away not coming back
I'm off the line
So call me when you can some other time
This heart attack
I've gotta get away not coming back
I want some downtime
So call me when you can and I'll be fine
Sometimes if we don't go
Sometimes you don't know
You don't go, I don't go
I don't go, you don't go
I've got your back
But you don't got mine
This heart attack
Then I'm feeling fine
This heart attack
I've gotta get away I'm not coming back
I'm 'bout to flat line
So call me when you can some other time
This heart attack
I've gotta get away not coming back
I want some downtime
So call me when you can some other time
I'm going away to be alone
I'm going away to be alone
I'm going away to be alone
I'm going away to be alone
In Miami Horror's song "Faker," the singer is expressing their need for solitude and time to reflect. They want to be disconnected from the world around them, specifically from those who are trying to contact them. However, the singer isn't entirely sure where they are going or what they are looking for. They are searching for guidance, and questioning whether finding love in the midst of their journey will be successful.
The second verse shifts perspectives, as the singer acknowledges the disconnect between themselves and their loved ones. They feel as though they have been "overreacting" to their own lives, but are still searching for a sense of belonging. The chorus switches back to the singer's desire for alone time, distancing themselves further from their loved ones.
As the song progresses, the singer becomes more resolute, recognizing that they need to take time for themselves to truly find what they are looking for. They acknowledge the transient nature of relationships, but still seek connection with others. The singer's final repetition of "I'm going away to be alone" highlights their commitment to their journey.
Overall, "Faker" explores the need for self-reflection and the disconnect that can arise between individuals. The song speaks to the universal desire to find oneself, but also acknowledges the importance of human connection.
