Fields Of Gold
Michael Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I once struck gold in this field
It paid the debts of my kills
My soul was sold, and all I owned,
To buy up what I had seen
I can't quite remember the cost
It seems even dreams were a loss
But I cleared out the timber and made me a home
It's the one with the lights always on
I once thought of selling the land
The thought brought a shake to my hand
My brothers were telling me that I'd be a fool
And I knew they were right
I've wondered if there's another lot
That's holding more than what I've got
But when you have a share in forever somehow
It's easy to quiet that voice
It's been easy to quiet that voice
I once struck gold in this field
I can't quite remember the cost

I once thought of selling the land
It's easy to quiet that voice

Overall Meaning

The first verse of "Fields of Gold" by Michael Patches Stewart sets the scene of the song. It speaks of the inevitable memory that will linger when the west wind blows upon the fields of barley. It alludes to a moment that has already passed, where the "sun in his jealous sky" was forgotten as they walked through the golden fields. The two lovers took their love to the field, and as they walked through it, her hair fell amidst the gold which was likened to the intimate moment they shared.

The second verse expands on the initial idea of taking love to the field. The man pleads for his lover to stay with him among the fields of barley. He promises to forget the jealousy of the sun and its sky as long as they are together in the fields of gold. The description of the wind moving like a lover also conveys the poetic nature of this song. It rises the partner's body as they kiss amongst the gold, giving the scene an ethereal, romantic quality.

The final verse shows the passing of time, many years since they first walked the fields of barley. But still, their memory lingers when the west wind moves upon the fields, and the sun sets upon the fields of gold. The promise made in the second verse - to walk in fields of gold - is remembered. For that moment, they had the world and all it ever meant, to them alone.

No doubt the most beautiful duet in human history.

Even in death Eva still lives on. Micheal's voice is golden and together it sounds magical. Thanks for uploading this wonderful GIFT......

I believe Sting said that when he first heard Eva's version, he wept. In my (humble) opinion, no one has done the song better than Eva. Her arrangements in covering many songs were better than the originals.

Wow. The fact that he honored this beautiful work with a duet is... deserving of a smile. It's so lovely, I couldn't quite tell they weren't doing this together. Still, I suppose there's the clarity in each vocal recording that just distinctly separates them. But that doesn't matter. What a tribute to her! Thanks to you, Michael Bolton!
