Jailhouse Rock
Michael Bolton & Carl Perkins Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The prison band was there and they began to wail
The band was jumpin' and the joint began to swing
You should've heard them knocked-out jailbirds sing
Let's rock; everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone
The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang
The whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang
Let's rock; everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Number forty-seven said to number three
"You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see
I sure would be delighted with your company
Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me"
Let's rock; everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Sad sack was sittin' on a block of stone
Way over in the corner weepin' all alone
The warden said, "Hey, buddy, don't you be no square
If you can't find a partner, use a wooden chair"
Let's rock; everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Shifty Henry said to Bugs, "For Heaven's sake
No one's lookin'; now's our chance to make a break"
Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, "Nix, nix
I want to stick around a while and get my kicks"
Let's rock; everybody, let's rock
Everybody in the whole cell block
Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock
Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock

The song "Jailhouse Rock" tells the story of a wild party that took place in the county jail. The guards, prisoners, and even the warden join in on the fun as the prison band plays music that gets everyone dancing. The lyrics reminisce about the good times that the jailbirds shared, as they all join together to forget about their troubles and "rock" their cares away.
The verses of the song describe the different members of the band, including Spider Murphy on tenor sax, Little Joe on the slide trombone, and the drummer boy from Illinois who plays a mean beat. The chorus encourages everyone to join in on the dance, with the repeated refrain of "Let's rock, everybody, let's rock."
The song also includes a story within the story: two inmates, Number 47 and Number 3, fall in love across the cell block and decide to dance together to the Jailhouse Rock. Even the sad sack in the corner joins in, encouraged by the warden to dance with a wooden chair if he can't find a partner.
Overall, "Jailhouse Rock" is a fun and energetic tune about finding joy in the midst of a difficult situation. It celebrates the power of music to bring people together and lift their spirits.

This is amazing Michael, an impressive performance, very emotional to see and hear you sing Jailhouse Rock with your magical powerful voice, so handsome, talented and awesome, and taking Elvis' body language, it's a fantastic , very moving rendition Michael. I jump and dance listening to it, awesome. I have a beautiful story to tell you about Elvis. I listened to him in my teens everyday on a little record cassette player, not only the major hits but all the songs from his early days, the gospel songs that are magnificent, the Rock, the blues, I know most of the songs, the lyrics and can sing along. I listened to him very regurlarly for so many years that I actually learnt a lot of english listening to him and took the american accent, I speak with the american accent since those days, so when I took my bacalaureat exam, the exam you take in france after college before going to university, here is what happened during the oral english examination : I spoke with the examiner a long time for the exam, he was very impressed with my level of english, he said he would give me the highest mark but as to make it more realistic, because it was a bit surreal to him, he would take one point off making it 19 out of 20 for my oral english mark, but the great thing which is a wonderful memory for me is that at the end of the test, he asked me if I had family in the usa , an explanation maybe for him of my excellent american oral english, with my sense of humor and remembering Elvis helped a lot in my training of english, I answered with my biggest smile : " Yes, Elvis !!" Not sure he understood but he smiled at me. I wish you a good day Michael, staying safe and healthy at Home with activities and enjoying the garden. Take good care Michael. I Love you.π Kisses ππππππππ
