It Had To Be You
Michael Buble ft Tony Bennett - Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Meglio stasera
Baby, go, go, go
Or as we natives say
"Fa subito"

If you're ever gonna kiss me
It had better be tonight
While the mandolins are playing
And stars are bright

If you've anything to tell me
It had better be tonight
Or somebody else may tell me
And whisper the words just right

Meglio stasera
Baby, go, go, go
Or as we natives say
"Fa subito"

If you're ever gonna hold me
It had better be tonight
Or somebody else may hold me
And they might make me feel just right

Meglio stasera
Baby, go, go, go
Or as we natives say
"Fa subito"

For this poor Americano
Who knows little of your speech
Be a nice Italiano
And start to teach
Show me how in old Milano
Lovers hold each other tight
But I want you, sweet paesano
It had better be tonight

Meglio stasera
Baby, go, go, go

Or as we natives say
"Fa subito"

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "It had to be you" multiple times, emphasizing the idea that this person is the only one for them. The writer has looked around and found other people, but no one else could ever make them feel the way their love does.

The final lines speak of how the writer loves the person they are with, despite all of their faults. For them, there is no one else in the world who could take their place. The song is a timeless classic that speaks to the power of love and the strong emotions that come with it.

At this moment Siriusly Sinatra satellite radio is playing a 'live' performance by Tony Bennett of IT HAD TO BE YOU ā€“ with the Ralph Sharon Trio, from his MTV 'unplugged' show which resulted in a million-selling album that won the top Grammy awards that year. We hear Tony's introduction that Johnny Mercer considered this "the best popular song" that Mercer ever heard.

It's 2021 and Mr. Bennett is in his 95th year -- 'still going strong' to judge from his Facebook page, where Tony, in the comfort of his living room re-visits his own all time favorites -- like ā€œSmileā€ (whose composer Charlie Chaplin considered Tony's early version to be the best he ever heard).

Mr. Bennett's expanded Wikipedia entry notes: ā€œHe has no intention of retiring -- saying in reference to masters, such asĀ Pablo Picasso,Ā Jack Benny, andĀ Fred Astaire: "Right up to the day they died, they were performing. If you are creative, you get busier as you get older!"

Recalling that, at the resurgence in his career in the late 1990s, Mr. Bennett was doing a hundred shows a year, and often makes a point of singing one song (usually "Fly Me to the Moon") without any microphone or amplification. A vivid reminder of why Sinatra considered Tony Bennett the best singer of them all.

At this particular appearance in 1994 onĀ 'MTV Unplugged' Mr. Bennett quipped: "I've been unplugged my whole career!"

Featuring guest appearances by rock and country starsĀ Elvis CostelloĀ andĀ k.d. lang, the show attracted a considerable audience and the resultingĀ "MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett"Ā album went platinum ā€“ taking the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance Grammy award for the third straight year, as well as winning the top Grammy for Album of the Year.

[His two most recent ā€œhonors & awardsā€ listed at Wiki:]

A statue of Bennett was unveiled outside San Francisco's Fairmont HotelĀ on 19 August 2016, in honor of his 90th birthday, and his first performance of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" at that hotel, in 1961.[128]

AĀ Guinness World RecordĀ for "the longest time between the release of an original recording and a re-recording of the same single by the same artist" for re-recording "Fascinating Rhythm" 68 years and 342 days after the original recording.[112]

It seems like dreams like I've always had. Could be, should be, making me glad. Why am I blue?, It's up to you to explain.
I'm thinking maybe, baby, I'll go away. Someday, someway, maybe you'll come and say. It's you that I need, and you'll be pleading in vain ...

It had to be you. It had to be you.
I've wondered around, and finally found, somebody who.

Could make me be true, could make me be blue. And even be glad, just to be sad, thinking of you.

Some others I've seen, might never be mean. Might never be cross, or try to be boss, but they wouldn't do.

For nobody else, gave me a thrill. Without your false, I'll love you still.
It had to be you, wonderful you...

It had to be you... ā¤ļøšŸŽ·šŸŒ–
