On And On
Michael Franti & Spearhead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just a little more time for you
Just a little more time for me
Just a little more time that we could be together
We go on and on, and on and on [x2]
We leave it behind but we’re still moving on and on

I remember when we use to play hopscotch out on the sidewalk
I would draw your picture there with my white chalk
Every day we’d ride bikes home through the schoolyard
We would eat, sleep, work just so we could play hard
Tired of calling mom saying “please come get me”
Traded in my bike for a beat up Chevy
Pops was home drinkin’
I was home dreamin’
And the years fly by like, boom!

[Chorus]
We go on and on, and on and on [x2]
We leave it behind but we’re still moving on
Ain’t life like that
It just goes on and on, and on and on
We go on and on, and on and on
We leave it behind but we’re still moving on
Ain’t life like that, it just goes on

I remember rolling in my ride to the White Stripes concert
Climbing in the back seat
Rolling up your short skirt
Steamed up windows
Then we graduated
Said good-bye to the town that we hated
Life gets harder every single day
And when you fall down, that’s the rent that you pay
We used to say forever
Now we say remember
Look at all the bad and good we’ve seen together
I’m sorry that I lost you
Happy that I had you
My heart still beats like, boom!

[Chorus]

Just a little more time for you
Just a little more time for me
Just a little more time that we could together

It’s simple like that
Simple as this, boom!

[Chorus]

Just a little more time for you
Just a little more time for me
Just a little more time that we could together [x2]

Life goes on

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "On and On" by Michael Franti and Spearhead is about the passage of time and how life moves forward, but at the same time, people hold onto memories and relationships. The song starts by talking about wanting more time with each other, highlighting how people are always trying to hold onto the present moment. The chorus repeats the phrase "We go on and on, and on and on" to emphasize how life continues despite the passing of time, and how people keep moving even after leaving things behind.

The second verse goes on to describe memories from childhood, like playing hopscotch and riding bikes with friends. It then transitions to memories of first love and heartbreak, showing how the joys and sorrows of life move along with time. The song ends on a positive note, with an acknowledgement of both the pain and the joy life brings, and how that's just the way of things.

Overall, "On and On" is a reflection on the passage of time and how people try to hold onto each other and memories. It highlights the bittersweet nature of letting go while acknowledging the continuity of life.

Come down selector
Hey
Uh-huh
Woah, woah
That's right
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(Here we go) Uh-huh, uh-huh
This one goes out to you and yours, worldwide...

I say hey, I'll be gone today
But I'll be back all around the way (uh-huh)
It seems like everywhere I go
The more I see, the less I know
But I know (I know) one thing (one thing)
That I love you (baby girl)
I love you, I love you, I love you
(It's true)

I've been a lot of places all around the way (yeah)
I seen a lot of joy and I seen a lot of pain
But I don't want to write a love song for the world
I just want to write a song about a boy and a girl

Junkies on the corner always calling my name
And the kids on the corner playing ghetto games
When I saw you getting down, well, I hope it was you
And when I look into your eyes I knew it was true

I say hey, I'll be gone today
But I'll be back all around the way (uh-huh)
It seems like everywhere I go
The more I see, the less I know
But I know (I know) one thing (one thing)
That I love you (baby girl)
I love you, I love you, I love you
(Haha)

Now I'm not a highly metaphysical man
But I know when the stars are aligned you can (okay)
Bump into a person in the middle of the road
Look into their eyes and you suddenly know

Rocking in the dance hall moving with you (woah)
Dancing in the night in the middle of June
My momma told me don't lose you
'Cause the best luck I had was you (true)

I say hey, I'll be gone today
But I'll be back all around the way (woah)
It seems like everywhere I go
The more I see, the less I know
But I know (I know) one thing (one thing)
That I love you (baby girl)
I love you, I love you, I love you

And I say, rocking in the dance hall, moving with you
I say, hey momma, hey momma, close to you (woah)
Rocking in the dance hall, moving with you
I say, hey poppa (cha) hey poppa (cha) kick off your shoes
Rocking in the dance hall moving with you
I say, hey momma, hey momma, close to you (woah)
Rocking in the dance hall moving with you
I say, hey momma, hey momma (hey), hey momma (hey), hey momma (hey), hey momma (hey), hey momma (hey), hey momma (hey), hey momma (hey)
Whatcha gonna do?

My momma told me don't lose you
'Cause the best luck I had was you (ah)
And I know one thing
That I love you

(Ah) I say hey, I'll be gone today (okay)
But I'll be back all around the way (you promise?)
It seems like everywhere I go
The more I see, the less I know
I say hey, I'll be gone today
But I'll be back all around the way
It seems like everywhere I go
The more I see, the less I know
But I know (I know) one thing (one thing)
That I love you (baby girl)
I love you, I love you, I love you (uh-huh, uh-huh)
I love you (hey), I love you (hey), I love you (hey, hey) (rocking in the dance hall moving with you)
I love you (yeah), I love you (yeah), I love you (yeah, yeah) (it's true, it's true)
I love you (ha), I love you (ha), I love you (uh-huh)

Rocking in the dance hall moving with you
(I say, hey poppa, hey poppa)
Hey momma, hey momma
Rocking in the dance hall moving with you
(Come on, hey poppa, hey poppa)
Hey momma, hey momma

When I was in my pre-teens, my mom was a big fan of Michael Franti. She saw him live twice, and I went with both times. He ended the shows with this song, and invited all the kids in the audience to come up on stage with him while he sang this one.

Just from that alone, this dude strikes me as genuinely being every bit as cool as he seems. The world could use more people like him.
